Hey all, saw a pair of 86 HD soft tail rims for sale. The seller really doesn’t know too much about them. I figure if they are stock they should be 16” rims. Want that fat tire in back and front look. From the pics they look like they are in good condition and the price is right. More than that I have no real idea what to be on the lookout for or against. I’d like to eventually mount them on my 80 xs. Any advice on the parts needed for that would also be appreciated.

Something similar. Very cool.

Thanks for responding 2Many. 36 and 40 I’m guessing you’re referring to spokes per rim but what do you mean by line up? Sorry, I have no experience with rims.

Hey, Setroc, it gets worse. In addition to making sure that the hub and rim have the same spoke counts (36, 40, 48, 64), there's the nipple angles in the rim, spoke lengths, spoke head angles and lengths. An entire industry is build around this. Try a forum search on "lacing" and "spoke count" to see how deep the rabbit hole is...

It’s never easy is it? The rim is just the beginning because I figure then there’s the parts of the rim/adaptor that will allow me to use an HD rim on a Metric bike. Lacing is a good start. Thank you!

Hi Setroc,
you say "80xs".
Would that be the XS650G (Special II) with the wire wheels & drum rear brake or the XS650SG with the 7-spoke cast wheels & disk rear brake?
Either one will need you to find after-market 40-spoke hubs to match the H-D rims.
Note that the 130/90-16 stock rear tire is the fattest that'll clear the drive chain and anything fatter than a 110 won't fit between the front fork sliders.
Not saying you CAN'T fit balloon tires on an XS650, just that doing so takes major frame modifications and that ain't just the depth of the rabbit hole,
it's the size of the elephant trap.

^That’s right Setroc, those tires are roughly 5.35” wide. Even if you managed to get the correct hubs, spokes... they’re too wide for your forks, and your chain will almost certainly rub against the rear. I was going for a similar look, and the widest I could clear was a 4.5” on the rear, and 4” up front
