Which clutch tool?

There seem to be two common clutch basket holding tools.

This one:

And if the second style, which one? Amazon has at least a dozen different ones. Which number for our beloved XS650s?

I agree, the clutch specific tools fit better with less fiddling. I bought the Tusk tool for my recent clutch job and it worked very well, with one warning. Tighten it just enough to hold the clutch basket, it doesn't take much. If you really reef down on it it can distort the clutch basket.

You can bolt a sturdy "L" bracket to a plate from your clutch by drilling two holes. Use two bolts, nuts and spacers to attach the bracket to the plate. You can reuse the plate when finished. No welding required. No spare plate needed. Just use a plate from your clutch.

You don't need one. If you have mags just block the wheel with a stick through it resting on the swing arm (keep away from the valve stem). If you have spokes you could get somebody to hold the wheel for a sec. I've done everything there is to do this way. A lot of time you can keep the part from turning with just your hand.

You can properly torque it by just holding or blocking the rear wheel and turning the nut against the chain. But two points of caution. If you use a rag between the front sprocket and chain to tighten, it will force the chain hard into that rubber thing around the shift shaft, not good. If you put the chain on just momentarily to tighten or loosen the front sprocket and block the wheel make sure the side plate is on the link, else it will bend the connector link and make it hard to use (did it once, had to bend the link back to normal). Now that I think about it, if you had the link on the proper side (top or bottom of chain) then you wouldn't need the side plate.
 
If there's a rock handy it's there for a reason! I saw you can get light bulb sockets for your ratchet now.
