I`m not sure about this but I think the Motolana swingarm is shorter. The Radian swingarm (direct bolt on??) is a little longer and uses a 17mm axle compared to the 20mm stock XS so a bearing change and new spacers have to be done. You would need to move the shock mounts in and forward to get the right shock angle. A neat braced Chrome-Moly swingarm would be much lighter and stronger.

Ah... i dont want shorter... haha. I like your idea of the chromoly swing the best. I could probably just cut off the axle plates and swingarm pivot, only thing id have to make is the shock perches... Alright im sold! haha... better start looking for some chromoly tubing!

better start looking for some chromoly tubing!
If you can't find any locally, these guys have a great selection of chromoly (4130) tubing. They're a mom and pop shop and just about the nicest folk you'd ever wanna' do business with.

Mitas dirt track tires are suppose to fit the stock swingarm on a 650. They are 1/2' shorter. Dave Durelle is a former national
number flat tracker. I'm going to order a pair sometime in the future (and drive down and pick them up)

Good links guys! Ive actually heard of the chromoly place! And the more i thought about it I should be able to make the entire swing out of 4130. Long as they have suitable tubing with a little undersized ID... then I can machine the ends here to fit the bushings...

Thats good to know about the Mitas tires... Interesting they have some DOT dirt track style tires...

Looking forward to seeing this project. I got into vintage road racing last year (I'm racing in the 160GP class with a few Honda 175's) and built my first race bike last year as well. I learned a TON and have taken that valuable info into my latest race bike build, which is just finishing up and am working on fine tuning the engine now...should be a bit more power and a bit lighter as well. :) Good luck!

Nice! Thats what will be the most fun i think... riding it and then making it a little better and faster every time! I think the way that i want to build this bike would put me in most unlimited classes... Dirt track and some back woods snow hillclimbs will be rad...

Yep, I think that's one of the disadvantages with the XS650...it's not small enough to compete with the middle weight bikes, and unless you do some big bore work, not big enough to be competitive with the bigger bikes, but just as heavy. Although I haven't really looked into the specs/rules to see if there's a class that it would be more ideal in or not....I just don't see any on the track--so I would assume there's a reason for that. :) Either way, it will be a blast!

Well i had some extra help last night with a buddy and some beers. We poached some parts from another bike and threw a pamco on the bike and a carb setup from another bike. Thing fired right up and sounded pretty damn good!

Timing is off and the jets are too fat, but it actually runs great for the motor just being seized!

Starting to get excited for this thing! Picked up this nasty little guy today off ebay... Well see when it gets here how much rust it has in it!

Got a bunch of stuff coming monday for the build. That front wheel kit from omars will be here. I have enough disc parts where i can prob get the whole rear wheel set up. Got a Shinko Dirt Track Hard tire coming tuesday. Ordered throttle cables... And have this tank coming...

Probably gonna scab some stuff together so i can ride it down the road and get a feel for the chassis. Then ill start making some real upgrades...

Let me know if that tank doesn’t work. I’ve got this little peach waiting for a good home and is in amazing condition with all the bits for mounting. It’s off a TY250. We could work a sweet deal for it if you are interested.

Hit me up if you are interested. It’s just sitting on the shelf looking pretty. It is nice and straight with original paint, Inside is pretty clean too. I just tried to fit it on my ‘78 special and it will clear the backbone but will likely need to move the coil to clear. Would be a pretty easy mod to fit an xs for a man of your talents. I’d be game for some straight up horse trading with ya too.

You could use something like this for the rear subframe if you end up going for it. I was going to use them when I planned on chopping my frame and adding these so I could just drop the motor instead of dropping a nut every time I took it out.

I had thought about using some of those... from what i understand they are just mild steel and heavy...

Im pretty set on this being a dedicated race bike. Right now i have the 19" rear that ill have a dirt track tire on. I have a 16" mag that should bolt right up, which will be set up with a dirt/snow/ice tire.

FRESH MEAT! Lol! Got those shinkos in today. Just ordered the rear first. I ordered the widest they had ... which was worrying me.... Had to warm the tires up and change them in the house as its too cold to do in the garage today. Brought them out to see if they fit on the stock swingarm. They have plenty of room aired up to the recommended 42psi... With a little lower psi they may rub a little, ill have to check later...

Wes I am doing a bike now close to what you want to do and I looked at a bunch of swingarms but just to many changes to make it work on a budget. The moto one is nice but need different shocks and axle is different and I called and tried to get other bearings but they are not common so that's extra. I have built three café bikes with mono shock and they were GPZ 750 and 1100 and were not bad installs. So the bike I am doing is just going to be the stock swingarm that I power coated. I still may need you to make me some pipes if you are up to it.

@DADDYGCYCLES yeah ive been looking into swapping swingarms, but your right nothings a bolt on, and stuff thats close you still need to buy all the stuff to swap.

I have a couple swingarms here that i can reference from xs 650s. I think im going to order some aluminum to make a fixture. Ill just bolt the old swing in the fixture, and redesign it in 4130 chromoly. Have to do a little research into whether i should make the swing arm extended or not. But I should be able to achieve a strong AND lighter swingarm... Bolt on.

Let me know if you need an exhaust! Def can hellp you out!
