Shinko 270 tires

They fit the bill for vintage looking... Shinko 270 rear + Avon front...

I have limited experience with vintage style tires... At their price point they seemed reasonable... They are actually quite round in profile with lots of tread on the sides... Rides nice and didn't require any balancing...

After a bit of research I have found that Shinko only has a 5.00-16 rear tire, I dont think that will fit my 81 Special. They have a 4.00-19 for the front that i belive will work on my bike. Shame i really like the look of this tire. Might opt for the dunlop K70.

Hi Jamie,
check the mfrs spec sheet, eh? 5"-16 is the Special's original stock size and the 130/90-16 metric equivalent has eff nigh the same dimensions.
The nearest metric equivalent to the 3-1/2"-19 original stock tire is 100/90-19 which unlike a 4"-19 has the same OD as a 3-1/2"-19 tire so it wont confuse your speedo's readings.

Look up the 240 and the 270, nearly indentical pattern and fitment but one is taller than the other. I researched awhile back and found the info somewhere online. Could be helpful in deciding which one best fits your needs, and fender.....

I have looked them up on the Shinko site, the 240 has the proper front and rear wheel size. The 270 has the proper rear wheel but the only 19" they have is a 4.00 and as Fred mentioned this will put my speedo off. I'm ok with the 240's they have the same look and same user reviews. Theres plenty of room under the rear fender but the front fender is close, so the correct 100/90-19 front 240 should fit better than the 4.00-19 270.

Should’ve mentioned I was only referring to the rear sizes, best of luck.

I've been running a Shinko E 270 500/16 on the rear of my 83 droped seat and it has performed very well. The rear needed a bit more rim weight than I would have liked but I'm not sure if it's the tire or the rim that's off. The front is a Firestone 400/19 and has no fitment issues and also performs well. They give the bike the look I wanted and good tire performance .

Kind of a heads up? Those tire patterns were common before rain grooved pavement and tar snakes were commonly used.
Just be aware there may be some tradeoffs going with that "retro"look.
I tend to use modern tire design even on the "restored" bikes. I figure if some future buyer wants period correct they can change tires.

I hear ya Gary, I'm the end user on this bike. The bike is that nice i want to show it period correct, it will be a daily rider me for this year and I plan on taking it to a few vintage class shows also.

I like my Dunlop K70s they are good on pavement and the venture into the gravel roads.
I ran a modern tread shinko front for a while and it did fine, but I heard of a couple guys that had the tread fly off... Chinese tires... so I opted to spend a little more on the Dunlop.
Didn't see it for myself but worth the extra $ IMHO

Treads fly off?!?!?!? I've wore out a couple Shinko 712's. Nope, the treads stayed on!

712 followed the grooves/tar snakes too much for me. 230 was much better

Wow it started as a 270 thread and now a 712.............

I run 712s on my 1100 and love them.................looking at the 720s or maybe even a old set of cokers for my 400 I am building.
