Cutting the cable! TV cable that is

lol well, I dunno how your going to get HULU if you cancel the cable TV but I'm all for it ! I think HULU is available through the internet...
that being said the internet is usually separate from the TV.... not always though depends on the package deal you got !
however I have seperate internet ...cable modem and pay an outrageous sum of $51.00 a month for it....
so if I turn off my satellite TV ...how do I get HULU on my TV ?..... WiFi or bluetooth, or do I have to run an internet cable to the TV ? ???
my TV can access the internet or so it says , I just don't know what to do with it LOL..... trying to do anything with the Sat dish remote
is strange....
....I looked at the old TV antenna I have out back and many of the elements are broken, but they can be repaired ( i think)
I think we would be quite happy with a few local channels and HULU given that HULU has a big library of shows to watch....
Like River Monsters !.... the first time I saw that fish I woke up the wife and showed her that Monster ! the very one you showed Bob... LOL
....he takes the fun out of water sports doesn't he !?!?!?!?!?!
Less money spent and more TV content ???? how can you go wrong with that ? theirs gott'a be a catch !
..... ( remember the o'l saying " if it sounds too good to be true...it probably is! " )
Bob....

yah ! that TV is smarter than I am !!!! it is definitely a Smart TV just bought it this last year its a 4K 65" HD LCD that does everything... ir so it says..... now where is that TV book ? that's a real good question ! I played with the settings so much it's unreal, but finally got it how we like it....
the problem is I can't seam to get the internet to do ANYTHING on it.... like ok it's on the internet but there is no operating system to do anything with it ! no browser, nothing.... just a box that says your on the internet...very bizarre !
....and what the heck is a ROKU anyway ? no doubt it's something I gott'a buy UH ?
I'll dig out the TV book and start studying stuff and see if I can figure this mess out ! LOL
thanks fer the help guys !
.....Bob.........

like DUH ! that was easy..... I asked my Kid to show me how to get on the internet with the TV..... she said I don't know, ...so where is the TV's Remote ? we hunted around for it, finally found it ... and using that remote we got right into the internet on the TV !
the first hurdle was getting past the Internet password and b.s. that is on the router, but having just done that for my laptop that was the easy part....... the hard part was controlling the funky way they do the controls on the tv view screen .....
but NOW.... I understand about HULU and the others..... their easy, just want money !
so with the satellite thing disconnected and a outside antenna connected....all I will have to do is have the TV look for the channels it can find
then I can watch them any time...... easy peezy ! man I'm getting old...it never occured to me to use the TV remote and not the satellite boxes remote ! LOL ..... brother ! some people are slow ! HA !
....
Bob.......

Also Bob, that old antennae? You can break off all the aluminum rods that stick out to the side, use them for little spears, blowguns or fat arrows. All you need is the uhf part. Point that towards the Big City.

nj1639: Umm I don't think so.... I brought the old antenna dusted off the snow and gave it a good looking over...
it looks allot like Mailmans antenna its a winegard super colortron ! wtf that is i have no idea....LOL it has a 300 Ohm balun in it's fancy plastic box, not a pre amp. so I'll need a 300 ohm to 75 ohm balun for that... just to see if I get any signals at all.... and it doesn't look too promising at all... I hooked a short piece of 75 ohm cable to the TV and clipped a 6ft wire to the center of the coax.. for an antenna
had the TV do it's automatic search and it slowed down once or twice on the first test, but never found a single station.
it tried to get a station on ch 10 but would never hold it, not too surprising given my setup.....
At the Winegard site I did their site test thing and it said I could get 6 chanels all 60.1 miles away.... most in Redding which I will never get as they are behind several mountains....but I should be able to get 3 or 4 channels at least from here......
the problem is doing that.
the antenna I have looks to be a $180.00 antenna but it is out of date / discontinued i believe. I've straightened the bent elements
and got it looking fairly nice now.... but think I will need a bigger antenna and a big antenna amp for any hope of getting a TV signal though.
one of the disadvantages of living in the back of beyond I guess.....
though I was suprised that I didn't get even one signal from out local TV tower... that confuzes the heck out of me, makes me thing the TV is out thinking me again and not actually looking for the signals and is just going through the motions...... the programers that make the programs for these things usually don't do all that great in my experience. <GRIN>
...The Book on the TV is useless.... it does not tell you how to get signals just how to plug in the coax....
....
i may walk around and see if I can find a house that has an out door antenna and see if they get tv signals....
back at the Ranch when I was much younger I put the TV antenna up on the C.B. tower and took down the C.B. antenna ( we had others)
it was a monster antenna and had a big 20db amp on it and we could even get chico some times .... but only the local channels were watchable......
and we were only 20 miles out'a town.... TV signals don't travle very well !
Bob........

LOS, line of sight. Digital signal doesn't bounce like the old analog did. The antennae needs to be outside and high for your application, roof peak at least. A set top antennae as in a six foot length of wire ain't gonna work.
My antennaes are over twenty five years old. Simple sheet metal screws that go into the body of the antennae to which a 75 ohm transformer is attached, 25' lead of coax to an amp. Aside from the amp, which amps the signal about 10+ db, my system is about as complicated as dirt.
Good luck.

thanks nj !!!! yah roof peek is the plan.... then I'll give it another go , sense I do have the TV connected to the net now I think I will cut the cord so to speak and kill the expensive TV stuff, maybe get HULU or something and live with that !
...... I just want to get local TV if I can .... i think I will be able to once the antenna is up and working.... may need an antenna amp too but that will be next month ! LOL
...
Bob..........

Bob, one more thing. If you're using an old antennae, consider cleaning and polishing the elements. VHF/UHF currents conform to the 'skin effect', the signal only passes on the conductor surface. Corroded surfaces seriously degrade the signal...

thanks 2M I know that, but haven't even considered it on the TV antennas.... yah they need a good scrubbing with steel wool !
the signals are AC after all and AC travels on the outside of the conductor....unlike DC which uses the whole conductor
I remember this from My Radio days as a Ham operator.....
thanks for reminding me !
( i need all the Reminding I can get any more ! LOL)
.....
Bob......

My TV already has the ability to do that without the ROKU attached..... all I have to do is connect to the internet
..... however each one of those channels cost you money...you have to sign up and pay monthly payments to them....
that is not FREE TV.....
......
Bob......

I just hooked up Roku, and I'm not seeing anything free. For instance, Bewitched is $1.99 per episode. I did try to watch a news segment that would only play for a few seconds at a time. I agreed to let Roku collect from my checking/paypal at their whim, that bothers me. Not sure if I'm going to tell my wife that I got wrapped up in this or not.

So far I can't discern what is free, afraid to make any selections because of that, and I haven't gotten anything to play/stream yet.

Scott

from what I've seen it's you have to sign up first before you can watch anything so they can charge you a monthly fee.... even You tube says you have to do that, when all you have to do is go on line and go to them through the web like you would on the computer...then it's free ....
it looks to be a way to separate you from your money.... like all TV ,i guess..... although you can still get FREE TV over the air by putting up an antenna , your choices are limited to your location though
so if you want a big selection you have to pay.
I for one think $100 bucks a month is far too much to pay to watch even good programs of which they have very few good ones.... and the commercials are just too many and destroy what ever it is you were watching to begin with.... i mean when you forget what you were watching before the commercials came on
why bother continuing to watch ? so I turn it off....
so the idea might be to Kill the $100 buck a month satellite dish and go with over the air TV that is free
like it used to be 40 years ago..... and if that's not enough get HULU or net flicks at $12.00 a month for your movie content... i think most of those will be around the same price $10 to $15.00 a month....
so choose wisely.... Myself I'll try a Pig in a Poke and sign up for one and see if I like it and if it's worth that amount to me or not.... but I'll just do ONE..... not 8 or 10 of them.... why pay $100 bucks for that
when I can already do that now ? hahahahhaha!
that's how I see it ....
Bob.........

Still feeling out the Roku, looking better than first impressions. Watched "Ernest Goes To School", only 3 short delays for buffering during the whole movie, not bad. I didn't even mind the commercials, because that is why it was FREE!!! Not that I would pay to watch Ernest, knowhutimean?
