Can I run my xs650 off a car battery just to get some stuff sorted out. I just want to get her started test some new switches and etc... also can I run it off a car battery hooked to a charger or for that matter can I run off a car battery charger alone?

You can run off of the car battery, but not the battery charger without the battery because the charger does not produce a true DC Voltage but depends on the battery to smooth out the ripples in voltage.

I like to use my lawnmower battery for these situations. Comes out of the lawnmower easy, enough amps to do the job, easy posts to hook up to, small, easy to move around, takes about 5 minutes to put it back in the lawnmower. But then, I'm always reminded that the lawnmower battery is a $20 item and the motorcycle battery, same type of construction, runs $50 to $60, what sense does that make?

You have to be very careful trying to run off of a car battery. The charging system is not capable of supplying enough amps to charge a partially discharged car battery. You can end up damaging the system.

Using a lawnmower battery is fine - they have similar capacity to a MC battery.

You can always jumpstart a motorcycle from a car battery, but remove the leads as soon as it fires.

I would not recommend using a car battery to jump starting a motorcycle that has a dead battery. If the motorcycle battery is deeply discharged the inrush of current from the car battery can cause the motorcycle battery to boil, possibly with explosive results.

As most have said a car battery can be used but with certain disclaimers, here's another, NEVER try to jump start a bike from a car with the car running.
When the car sewes the voltage drop from the bike cranking the alernator comes on and with a 105 or better amp rating you get that full amp charge rate into the bikes electrical system. This surge only lasts a few millseconds but that long enough to burn up parts of the bikesx elecrical saystem.
I'm currently working on an 83 that some one did this too. The TCI box, the TCI pick ups are toast. A Pamco fixed those issues but still working through some others.

As always I appreciate the display of knowledge. Good information.
