What have you done to your XS today?

Looking great Chet.. I have one of those scissor jacks ..........I haven't had the courage to jack the whole bike off the floor with it yet though
I'm hoping that I can use a cordless drill and a 22mm socket adaptor to raise and lower but there may be too much weight for the gear ratio

Finished polishing the clutch side cover and installed. Fresh oil. Got the tank and side covers from the painter and installed. Adjusted the chain. Trimmed the throttle sleeve and installed some weighted bar ends. Gassed it up and went for a spin!
Sorry, no pics. Will post a pic tomorrow.

Took a pic today. Another nice day for a ride.

I picked up a new project bike. It's a 1980. Not terribly pretty for now, but the frame is registerable and the engine turns over by foot and feels good.

It's going to be a scrambler type thing when I'm done. Got all the stock wiring and junk off of it, and started trimming off the tabs and cleaning up the frame. I think I might be able to get this one running just with spare parts that I already have.

Time to check your signal light stalks to see if the nut is loose. Otherwise you may find it dangling by the wire.

Took the new project bike in to the quarter car wash after a few soaks of purple power. Threw away nearly 60 lbs of junk parts, wiring and tabs that I took off of it. Put the tank on. Starting to look respectable.

Doing a (badly needed) tire change on Madness, found a flat spot in the rim, I fixed it. I've fixed a lot of stuff with that 50 ton press.....

Have a line on a replacement rim or 2 LOL.

Yesterday was blue sky and 11 Celsius in Cardiff UK so I went for a nice trip to test out my rewound alternator rotor. After approx. 50 miles the voltmeter started to show fluctuations with 14.2V rarely being reached. Oh I say! Got home with the battery low and started testing:
  • Rotor resistance perfect
  • Stator resistance perfect
  • Rectifier diodes checked out perfect
  • Swapped in the old rectifier/regulator and problem persisted
Read a 2017 thread where 5twins suggested checking the connectors for contamination/dirt/corrosion. I found very bad corrosion on one of the 3-phase wires in the 8-Pin where the rectifier/regulator plugs in. I cut the plug out and replaced it with another and the charging issues went away immediately. With the newly rewound rotor and all connections in the charge circuit cleaned I now get 14.2V at 1500rpm.

gggGary !!!! you crack me up ! LOL
but that is the best strategy I've heard of in months ! .....needed the tire so brought home the whole bike ! I can get into that idea !!!!
.....
I looked at the XS650 to day..... but walked away.... got too many other projects in the works at the moment !
.....

Wow, now that's nice, low bars and the 80SG seat............... If your not a professional photographer you definatly have the eye for a pic. Nice composition on the front end.........................goes to show how a pic can bring out the best lines on the Specials. That 80 seat model still had good lines.
