What have you done to your XS today?

I got my bodywork back from the pinstripe today. I'm not very happy with the results which is mostly my fault for not suppling pictures of kinda what I wanted. I learned, a long time ago that you can't instill your vision in someone else so why I got careless, I don't really know. I am not willing to grind everything off and start over so I will have to live with it. I will have to find another painter to correct some of the work then clear everything and cut and buff.
Doug your tracker is really coming around. It`s nice to see someone do something with Yellow besides that "Ho Hum" Yamaha Yellow-Black Kenny Roberts race design.

Standard tank back from paint.... still have to finish wiring it ( been totally dragging my feet) As well as get the side covers done in gloss black so you won't see the battery box or ugly pod filters.

Thanks Half, I think I found a painter to fix the stripping. gotta take the tank and seat to him tomorrow to see what we can do. Man I am ready to be done with cosmetics on this project. It's been about there months and it's not quite finished.

Dang! I hope the carbs off my 1978 don't look like that when I tear into them. Bike was last registered in the 1990's so will be interesting to see!

Well today I attacked the carbs expecting to find some thing like gggGary found. To my surprise they were not all that bad. A small amount of sediment and varnish in the bowels and a bit of white powdery stuff above the bowls.

The only thing that might be a problem is the diaphragms are a bit on the stiff side. Not hard or cracked but not nice a supple like new ones. I'm thinking about trying Mailmans idea of washing them in ultrasonic cleaner then coating with silicon spray to see if that softens them without causing them to swell up.

Anyone else have ideas, short of replacing with new?

With regards to the diaphragms, on my 77’s carbs , I followed a video I had seen on YouTube and sprayed them with silicone spray and bagged them to soak. Gary and 2M raised the concern that the solvent in the silicone spray could prove detrimental. They seemed to come out just fine.

On my XS2 I took a gentler approach. I cleaned them with warm soapy water and after rinsing and drying them, I wiped them down with pure silicone grease , similar to this,

I bought mine in the plumbing section of my local hardware store. It has a very light feel and it is made for lubricating rubber seals and o rings. A little bit goes a long way.

Hey Chet. Nice paint!!! What kinda tires are those? I’ve been looking for a knobby 16”.

Took my 80 Special for a short ride today. Was briefly delayed by a leaky petcock. Those 90 degree hose connectors seem to be glued together. When I took it off to inspect the fiber washer the two pieces were very loose. I had a spare that came with the petcock so I put it on. All good - for now anyways.

Lots of bikes on the roads today in Calgary. Snow forecasted for next week :(
