80 to 84 regulator / rectifier

Yes, just about all of them have something wrong with them, sometimes even the factory ones. This one, after a quick look I see it has the black ground wire from the sidestand relay hooked to a brown power wire instead of a black ground wire.

Fixed and re-posted the diagram

Very good. I will be using this one in the future (combined with the factory shop manual version) as I now have an '83 to work on. I want to eliminate all those added safety switches and relays, and add a headlight on-off switch (handlebar switch from '77).

All good info guys regardless if flawed or not. Regarding the question I hard earlier about the posted wiring diagram I wasnt sure if the feed from the reg/rect had to be fused cause I hadn' t wired it up on my bike. Thats all. I had the original fuse box (round) type that I replaced with a Blue sea blade 4 fuse box and rewired the entire bike.

Hi guys. To start i do not have stock wiring and I am wiring direct to the 6 pin connector for the stator and bypassing the 8 pin (with 7 wires). I have fused power going to regulator then to green on plug and have case grounded. On the rectifier i have 3 whites tied in, red to battery and blk to ground. From what i see on the wiring diagram a 2nd power feed goes to brown on 6 pin( mine is red). What about the sky blue? I see it goes to safety relay but i dont have any. Does it need power? I tried starting but a no go. It started 2 weeks ago when i noticed it wasnt charging. I also was getting powerto brushes but was +/- 1 voltfrom battery. Any ideas are welcome.

You want fused, switched (with key) power going to the red on the regulator (brown on stock unit) but not to the green. The green should be connected to the outer brush. There should be a green wire in that 6 pin plug from the alternator. It runs to the outer brush. Yes, switched power needs to be fed to the inner brush, usually through the brown wire in the 6 pin alternator plug. The sky blue is usually from the neutral light switch on top of the motor.

Ok i have it correct. Thanks for confirming this. I must of disconnected or didnt reconnect properly something while removing the old reg/rect from the wiring box. Need to investigate. I ended up buying a chrysler voltage reg locally yesterday cause i received the rectifier from windy nation. Had to try something. As mentioned it has magnetism, +/- 11.5 volts at inner brush. Battery was at 12.5v.

And charging 14.8v and all is good. Thanks for all the help just need to do up a heat sink for the rectifier and tuck all in the wiring box.

Paul Sutton. I received your notification. Not sure why it hasnt been posted yet. I have a non adjustable chrysler regulator but not sure of factory fixed settings. I have a lithium ion battery on my bike. No liquid levels to check and was nice as it is able to be mounted in any position. I will be installing a lcd display on my bike somewheres to view voltage output to keep my eyes on it at all times. My old 77's charging system failed on me on the road back 7 years ago.

I started to write but then remembered you have the Lithium battery so deleted my entry as not relevant. But glad to hear everything is working well. I assume the Lithium battery has a charging regulator/monitor built into it to allow it to use the power from the bike and monitor each cell.

Hi Paul. I am not real sure about the monitoring. It is a Shorai LFX series with similar cranking amps. I have read a bunch of reviews about them along with the Ballistic 8 cell. I took my bike out for a 20km spin and it runs great! Real happy cause it was the first time I rode it since I purchased it back in January. Done a pile of stuff to it and now it will sit this way. Took me back to when I had my 77. Here I am after the run.

Can you post a picture of the your reg/rec and how you mounted it on the bike? I just did the continuity test on my sealed unit and it failed so I am thinking of following this route as well. Much appreciated!

You don't really want your rectifier inside a box. It does get warm. In the open air this heat dissipates quickly. Inside a box it might not. This may overheat the rectifier. Maybe the other stuff inside your box too.
