So Many Insane Prices - Just a Rant LOL

Mine is pretty original, has a good barn petina. It's not super pretty, but it was free. I wouldn't even know what to ask for it.
Free? Guess I got took I had to pay $200 for a pair of XS650's with an XS400 thrown in as the guy wanted to clean out his shed. Then I bought the 1978 for $75.00 other than a wiring harness that had been made into a rats nest of wiring it was 90% complete. All my XS650s have been rough looking from abuse but still like them.

They may start out cheap but they don't stay that way, lol. Mine was a freebie but with all the replacement parts and fixing it needed, I gave up keeping track when I hit about $600. I've already dropped near $200 on the $200 Special I'm fixing up now, lol, and I haven't even put in a major parts order yet. I've just been collecting up the various bits I need from various sources (steering head bearings, TX750 swingarm, Euro bars, stainless brake line, etc.).

my dad bought it years ago. i was 15? he used to take me to my first job on the back of it. Never messed with it though. the clutch was misadjusted and it wouldnt kick worth a damn. Also the electric start is funny.

Original XSs are going to be hard to find someday soon.
.

They already are. Maybe a lot depends on the part of the country you live in, but around here, they are rare. I know a lot of guys want to build custom bikes and that is certainly their choice, but the pool of unmolested original bikes is shrinking rapidly. They went from being a dime a dozen to being very hard to find seemingly overnight. When I was looking for the one that was my 60th birthday present , I had to expand my search to a four state area, and wound up buying one from out of state. ( I overpaid for a bike that was promised to be more than it was! )
I see a parallel to early Volkswagens, they were once so common, you couldn’t swing a dead cat without hitting three of them. Then they started getting cut up to make dune buggies and sand rails or just wound up in the junk yards. Have you priced a vintage original condition VW bug these days? Did you ever think you would see the day that an underpowered VW bus could cost as much as a house?
There are four for sale in the Phoenix area right now for $40,000 or more! Such as this one.

Such is the nature of supply and demand.
All that being said, Yamahas are still are not investment material, just a fun if expensive hobby.

I don't think these are outrageously expensive bikes to own or fix up. Sure, a 10 point resto is gonna cost you, but I don't do that. I prefer the resto-mod route, stock looking as much as possible still, but improved in many areas barely or not seen. This is a very nice, competent old bike when fixed up like that.

Yeah, no title I Washington is a big hassle. It has to be road ready, get inspected by the state patrol, then pay 3-4x the regular registration price that first time, then in 3 years you can apply for a title. If it's still in the computer there is a step or 2 added to it.

Hi Mailman,
and where can you buy a house for $40K, eh?
nowhere I'd want to live.
Just paid Cdn$230K for a small bungalow in Saskatoon.

I know my parts stash is going to go up in price overnight...............No more GST free on overseas orders, (used to be up to $1000), now if an overseas seller sells more than $6000 worth of gear into australia in a 12 month period, they have to pay the Gov't the 10% GST value on top of the price the seller is getting..................... I have no idea how they are going to asses a small seller of parts, (it will be up to the seller to prove and not the Gov't), so all the hoops and rings one will have to go through to prove they are below the threshold, will put all of you US guys off from selling to us guys over here................figure it will be time to sell up soon.

This comes into affect on the 1st of July this year

No title, no idea if it runs, and half chopped. I think the price is a bit high.
I have a 1978 with title and it runs all lights works and horn goes beep and I'd be awful tempted to sell it for that price! I only see a hand full of parts there other than a possible good core for an engine overhaul. If the right side exhaust is there and looks as nice as the left looks I'd offer a few dollars for that!
Just have to hope that was not a nice complete bike when the sawz-all came out!

I think the seller was originally taking offers at $3500, but has since dropped the asking price to $2000.

Not sure what is going on with the headlight and the handle bars...

Prices can be a little nutty in here in BC.
And I like that the poster is spending all his time writing about the various appeals of the XS650 and nothing about the actual condition of the bike or if it has a title!

A seller can ask for any price he can dream up. If that asking price is way higher than value, it's only crazy if some fool pays it.
