I just picked up a sectioned XS650 engine the other day, and I can't find any information on the potential history of sectioned engines at all. Seller told me he believed that it was sectioned by apprentices or mechanics at one of the state Yamaha distributors in Australia. It has an s650 prefix but no number,

Does anyone have any idea of the history of sectioned engines like this?

there was just a post about this over at the SR500 forum, one of the guys there has a sectioned SR motor, apparently Yamaha used to bring in a complete bike for compliance purposes when they introduced a new model, after they finished with it they donated it to the tech colleges, who would then us it as they saw fit, some of them got sectioned.

Not sure about that.
I thought it was done by Yamaha at their factory as Yamaha used a sectioned engine in their advertising (for the 71 model I think).
Some old magazines show these ads.
Also the sectioned XS1 engine was on display at some dealers at one stage. I remember seeing one at a local Yamaha dealer.

yeh I have no personal knowledge of this, I was just repeating what was said over there, it would make more sense that Yamaha would have done it, especially since it hasn’t got a proper serial number.

I was watching that one on ebay last week here in Australia.
The only other I have seen is this one on Youtube located in Germany. It looks very similar to your sectioned engine. Possibly they were something the OEM offered to tech training centers back in the day..?
The youtube user has some other interesting xs650 videos as well, including a very tidy clutch slave set-up.

Here are the photos used in the ebay sale.
