Hi All

Got a complete eBay transmission here I bought cheap that I was going to keep as a spare but now I'm thinking of using. To me, everything looks pretty good. Good gears, good bearings, all threads good. However I noticed a small chip on a tooth of the main axle when I took it all apart to inspect. See pictures....
Also the main axle itself is slightly different to a couple of others I have on hand. From comparing on eBay, it looks like 82 on were different?

So my question is, keep it and run it or flag it? Can anyone shed light on the axle difference? Are they interchangeable? Were the gears different on those transmissions too?

cheers

Hi wherearewe,
alas I've no idea if that axle's design will work for you or not but I'd not let that chipped tooth bother me.
I'd just clean up the jagged edge with a slip-stone and run it.

Hi Fred

Thanks for the input. What do you make of the wear marks on the flanks? I guess the picture doesn't show it that clearly? While the other gears from this transmission set don't show much wear at all, the axle itself does.

That's the mainshaft 1st gear. Consider that the mainshaft runs backwards compared to the engine crankshaft. Knowing that, you can determine which gear faces handle engine output. The opposite faces handle engine braking, and kickstart forces.

Couple pics of other member's trans, showing the 1st gear faces.
(Smallest gear in the pics)

Your 1st gear will work, dress the chipped edge like Fred suggests.
Your call if you want to run it with those rough faces.

May want to check the diameter of the spines, some unknowns about 2 different diameters. Do a forum search on "OD 5th" for discussions on that.

Scooterbrain's thread goes into 1st gear issues, but mostly about the mating countershaft 1st gear.

Thanks for that post TwoMany. Always helpful and insightful. I think its unlikely i'll run that axle but some good stuff for spares.

I read through that thread you linked. Im curious about the service bulletin points. Measuring the lateral play of the gears.... I tested via feeler gauge & what I noticed is that the 1st wheel has a lot of lateral slop compared to all the other wheels. Curious I checked 3 transmissions. All are more or less the same... Is this coincidence or a common issue?

Wherearewe, dunno. I've been on this forum only 5 years, and scooterbrain's thread is the only one I know of that gets into the 1st gear details. That transmission service bulletin has been available for quite a while, numerous downloads, but no feedback on its use.

I think (hope) that the silent majority uses information from this forum in a thoughtful and conscientious manner, and what we see posted here is inquiries from folks needing help.

On the other hand, I see a lot of transmissions on eBay, and posts of folks doing simple swap-overs, with no mentions of finessing the clearances.

Kinda like the PMA issues. Untold numerous successful PMA swaps out there, we mostly just see the problematic installs and novice users...

Hi wherearewe,
I've seen worse and I've run worst but only because I had to.
Mind you, there are limits to that, like this sprocket off a Honda that I told my son to walk away from but he bought it anyway:-

The seller said "You gotta keep the chain real tight" Yeah, right.
Best you keep that shaft as a souvenir and look for a better one.
