Figured I should finally post up after all my lurking! about 10 years ago I bought a 1974 XS650 for 400 dollars with 3k miles on it. Had sat for a long time. Cleaned the carbs, rebuilt the forks, new battery, brakes and tires. Was a great running and pretty clean bike. Ended up selling it regrettably when I needed money. Really loved riding that bike

But I'm back in the XS game with a 1977 XS650. I plan on keeping this one forever so its getting all the love. With the exception of rebuilding the motor all bearings, bushings, electrical connections, suspension, lights, charging system (pma/pamco) brakes have been or are getting replaced/rebuilt. Stock charging system was completely fried. Can't wait to get this finished and finally take it for a ride.

Here is the 74 I had originally

And the new 77

the rotor had completely separated halves and the wire came unwound, destroyed the stator with it

Welcome to the forum KonigXS650, and to the 77D owners club. Looks like you've got a great project there. Enjoy and keep us posted on developments.

Just waiting on payday so I can order the next wave of parts! Definitely turned into more a project than I had intended but I'm enjoying the wrench time and I'll know every part of the bike. I can ride with confidence knowing its 100% sorted.

Well, a PMA set-up may have something to say about how well sorted it is, lol. I advise installing a voltmeter so you get an early heads up when the charging quits.

Welcome Konig,
The 77’s are a good year. Enjoy your new bike and keep us posted with your progress.
Bob
And oh yeah, pictures man pictures!

Thanks to everyone for putting up with all my questions and helping me sort this thing out (mostly 5twins, sorry haha) I finally got to hear it run. Fired second kick for its first start. And fires 1st kick ever since. Pretty sure the battery is toast though, it barely cranks the motor over and all im reading is 13 volts at all rpm. have another on the way
