Jim's 1980 SG Miss September

I use the Scotchbrite Roloc discs as well. Big time and work saver. How rough the surface ends up depends on the grade of pad you use. The super fine gray ones get it to the point where I can start buffing usually. A little sanding may be required in the nooks and crannies the pads won't get into.

The fine (blue) pad is good for removing heavy corrosion. The medium (maroon) pad will remove deep scratches and gouges but must be used carefully as it knocks a lot of aluminum off. Sanding out deep scratches was always such a chore. I see many on here don't bother but I can't say I'm very impressed with their finished covers. Their covers may shine but they still have a big scratch in them, lol.

Test Question....
How can ya tell if a float valve has been sticking for a loooong time?
Answer: The outboard side of the float bowl looks like this.......

Been a while since I seen a 40yr old bowl look that clean. I'm waiting on parts for the electrical, so I thought I'd start on the carbs. Got everything ordered today. Time for some cleanin'....

Man that is clean. I can’t remember, did you say you have a sonic cleaner you’re going to use?

Ya, I've scratched me head at that one as well Jim. I've now got 5 sets of BS38's for 3 bikes and 2 of them look like someone was pretty PO'd at the state of things. I mean really, ya think a ball peen hammer is a carburetor tool?

Looks like 3 quarts will be enough to clean yours up!

Okay, now as soon as you let us know how it goes I just may have to think seriously about it myself!

I have the 220 outlet in garage and even a 220 outlet on a portable welder that might be able to run it if I need or want to work out side in warm weather.

hmmmmm....I've got 220v out there as well......

....as soon as I can see some floor space in DCW (and get the rest of these danged tests graded :notworthy:), I might just get one of those too....

Shine On You Crazy Diamond......

Heh.... youse guys dint think I'd put a beat to hell float bowl on this thing... didya?

Polished float.jpg
Removed dings and polished the bowl.... body soaked in cleaner for two days. Sprayed all passageways with WD40 and blew out with air. Still have to remove butterfly shaft. Down to piddling while I wait on parts...

Don't know what the included gaskets will be like but the ones that came with mine years back were thin paper. I chose not to use them, instead opting for thicker O.E.M. type gaskets. Don't recall of you used the Athena gasket set, but that's where mine came from. They were nice and thick just like originals.

Yeah, I have the thick Athena's. Any info/comments on the rubber intakes?

Hopefully they are the good ones, the original ARS brand. They say they're made in Japan which is where the ARS ones are made too. Examine them closely when you get them to see if "ARS" is stamped on them somewhere.
