Never having seen a complete XS in person is somewhat a handicap.
For my tracker build I have detabbed what i know will be obsolete but im not sure on these posts hoops and mount under the frame tube . The hoops look like they might be speedo cable routing ? (GPS speedo now ).
Help direction appreciated in advance. Mitch

Hoops are for the tach cable. the plate is for the upper engine mount and other things. Like the coil and turn signal relay.
 
WHY would you do that?

Its a tracker build from bits and pieces I started with just a frame, it will be PMA kick only with a custom harness electrics etc so lots of tabs and bits get the chop as they are obsolete as in no side covers no air box no battery no seat lock or hinges all gonesky!
No i am certainly not a purist ant this is not a restoration its a recreation with flavor!

Why cut anything off? Especially if you ask what to cut off :D A lot of times people use these for their first build because they're still relatively cheap, and a lot of times the result ends up leaning against the shed, in the weeds. With an old rug partially covering them if they're lucky. It peaked when those make a motorcycle "reality" TV shows were popular. The cool thing now is stock.

If you read my post you would have your answers to your first two questions .

As for the rest of your post which is just a statement of your opinions, it is of no help, trouble is opinions are like arseholes everyone has one ill leave yours well alone.

If you read my build post you would see that I have a long history of finished projects of much more complexity including 3 muscle cars and over a dozen VW busses mostly to concourse standard start to finish all trades by me. I wanted something not to taxing to occupy this winter between ski trips and when the surf is flat because I do have a life other than Internet forums and bikes.

This build is around a basket case, the frame motor and all components have been separately sourced the frame was found in a mates scrap pile that I have saved from the rust gods for the price of a 6 pack.

As for popularity I care less about that than you appear to, I am building this for my own satisfaction not yours or for others approval.
I haven't seen the shows you mentioned in Australia any recommendations? At least that would be something for you to offer or share rather than your smelly opinions.

As for cool see again re opinions. Keep it up and ill have a word with our PM and see if i can convince him to pull Australia out of our stupid ANSUS treaty with you Yanks !

The little posts are for mounting the side reflectors, you may or may not need them when you re register the bike.
To start with I only cut off the lugs or what ever part that stopped me fitting the parts I wanted to use on my tracker. Then when the bike was assembled any unneeded parts were obvious and cut off. Saves the pain of putting a bracket back on.

Tanks Signal, makes sense, pretty much what i will do, the ones i have cut I knew i didnt need , side covers, battery box, indicator mounts. I was really mostly curious about the two posts on the gusset between the triple clamp stem and top bar.

Well, there you go. All the information you wanted, and some you didn't. Take it with a grain of salt. You've got people from all walks here, building everything from nut & bolt restorations, to chopped up radical builds that Japan could never foresee. Myself, I've got three basket cases in the shop. The first to get done is a '75. It'll be a brat-bobber (thread to start soon!). All three are so roached, restorations would be prohibitively expensive, needing all new everything. Cheaper to chop 'em. Keep the Faith, keep us posted, and take LOTS of pictures!

the flattish bracket is the stock two coil mount, I'm guessing you will use some aftermarket ignition, they all use one twin tower coil so that bracket can go. The front hole for the upper engine mount is far left. Yes a full mock up THEN cut off parts really saves time, Not having DUH I fricking needed that moments, priceless. I work both sides of the fence, restore and custom, that frame looks like a GREAT prospect to cut and chop. DO do some careful checking, that the neck is straight. The most likely reason an XS is laying behind the barn in pieces is a crash. Any hit big enough to seriously bend the fork tubes, has likely tweeked the frame also.
 
Kinda I really should check this more often myself thing. Grab a ball peen hammer and give some gentle/moderate taps to the bottom of the rear frame rails. A good idea on any frame that's been laying about out in the weather. Water can get in and eat those lower tubes away to uselessness.

thanks Garrrrrrrrry or Gazza as we say down under. I thought that was the flat brackets purpose and yes you are also on the money i have a twin coil H.O. to install but as recommended Ill complete the mockup first . What do you think about a reg / rect. on the OE coil mount? would it be vented enough?

Would maybe work, but the wires will be long. It tends to get pretty crowded there once the ignition coils are mounted, and maybe a horn. While this has been successfully ignored many times a rubber mounted battery, electronics box somewhere aft of the carbs tends to work well. With small yet powerful batteries now available, a snug neat package there is quite doable. QUERTY is button pusher for sure. He made me ride 2,000 miles in a week to prove to him I'm not JUST an armchair wanker.
 
Cheers Gazza, I am going PMA capacitor kick only just to be fashionable 8). I plan to fab up a small box under seat for electrics might hang the reg of it. But as you guys have said measure twice cut once .. mock up is the way to go. And ill get my ball pane out cheers.

Yeah, I’ve read all of this and I’m sorry we got off on the wrong foot. As other folks have said, it’s your bike and you can do as you please with it. My only point in asking why was on the coil mount plate below the tank.

That plate is (aside from mounting the ignition coils - which are pretty necessary unless you’re going diesel ;)) is a very handy and out of the way spot for horns, turn signal flasher relays etc. etc.

Anyhow best of luck on your build and welcome to the site (oh yeah, we do love pictures).

I cut all that stuff off but it also depends on the tank you are using and the look you are going for.
Chopper Café Brat all makes a difference.

My thinking might be different from others but I would not cut anything till I had mocked the complete bike up so I could get a good idea of what was going where. Now it would be a different story if you had a complete assembled bike to start with.
I’m of the same thought, no sense in putting the carriage before the horse or some shit like that. It’s not going to hurt anything to leave it alone until everything is laid out.
 
I cut the tabs off of mine and left the coil mounts. I, however, have the luxury of looking at my bone stock bike before I make any cuts on my custom. Feel free to post pictures on any items you have questions about. If you have access to a welder, you can always fab up new brackets. That's the beauty of steel.

Which reminds me, I should get back to work on my project. It's been idle for six months. :(
