hey guys, really need your help on this as I’m at my wits end.

I was running my bike with a sparx capacitor, PMA, pamco with e advance, 2-1 intake and a Vm36. She ran pretty well, but my little brother got a set of vm34’s from Hoos racing and it seemed to run a little smoother. I figured I’d get the same kit and put it on mine.

His was bolt and go, on a 1980 with stock charging system. Mine is a total nightmare.

They leaked when I got them, so I set the floats and fixed that. 23mm both carbs. Now the problem is that I cannot get the bike to run when I give it throttle. It dies if I roll on slowly, and sputters and misses like crazy if I open it fast and hold it.

My baseline jetting was as follows
P5 needle jet
6DPI needle
30 pilot
175 main
2.5 slide
Air screw 1.5 out

I’ve tried everything I know of. I inspected the cabling and ensured they’re pulling in sync. I’ve ensured they bottom out completely when released. I’ve tweaked the air screws in and out, I’ve cleaned the carbs, I’ve inspected the jets for blockages, I’ve moved the needle clip from the middle to the top to the bottom, I’ve tweaked the idle screws, I’ve put a smaller main jet (165) in because it was blowing black smoke on the 175 when opening the throttle with the clip on the top position (leanest).

For the life of me I can’t get these carbs to work and I’m kicking myself for buying into the hype that dual carbs run this bike better.

I’m so lost and ready to return these damn things. I’ve talked to Gary on the phone three times and we’re out of options outside of sending them back.

Please help, what am I missing here?

I feel like it’s worth mentioning as well that the cap ran the single carb setup without issue. Is there anything about a dual carb setup that would be different with regard to electricity and output?

I thought you wrote that you bought the carbs because of good performance on your brother's bike, not because of "hype?" Spark requirements will not have changed, but make sure you didn't jostle any wires loose when you changed carbies. For what it's worth, your pilot jets are richer by 2 steps than anything I've ever found to run in VM34s on XS650 street motors. #2.5 slides should be fine. Verify fuel level with a sight tube, then try 25 PJ, 175 MJ, clip in the middle. You may want to have 180 and 185 mains on hand too. Start with mix screws at 3/4 turn and adjust from that setting. Post results and we'll go from there.
