I know a lot of you can do this for yourselves but if by chance you can't make your own I can provide Oil Sump Filter Shields for $30 including shipping to anywhere in the contential US or Canada. Alaska, Hawaii and other countries will vary.

Or you can live with the consequences of this:

One of us is confused, maybe it's me.

My understanding of the problem is that the pressure of the oil stream causes the sump screens to break and allows everything, oil, gunk, metal bits and plastic bits to flow through the screen without being filtered. Next stop, the oil pump.

My Sump Screen Shield diverts the oil flow and protects the screen allowing it to do its job of pre filtering the oil. I see no need to seal the edges.

As a matter of fact, sealing the edges will reduce the filter area. My sump screen shield protects the screen without reducing the filter area. And while these filters are plenty big, any reduction in filter area will reduce the overall service life of the sump screen requiring that they be changed more often.

The best thing about my Sump Filter Shield is that it can be reused for as long as you own your XS and will probably outlive you and your XS without any modification to your bike-- it simply bolts on.

And if gunk does get around it then the gunk will be caught and kept out of the oil pump by the screen that remained intact because the Shield prevented it from breaking.

So to answer your question, I recommend you don't seal the edges.

:hump:Ah I missed that too. His shield is for a NEW filter not a beat up old torn one like us cheap asses want to use.:hump:

Bump de bump bump... I've decided to do a few for $10.oo off if anyone is interested in a bolt on part that will extend the life of your XS650 and never need replacement-- just clean it when you finally change your sump filter.

Still $10.00 off shipped to anywhere in the US or Canada. Note: This will not repair a broken sump filter but it will prevent breaks to sump filters while allowing the filter 100% capacity.

So in your first pic you have mikesxs upgraded oil sump filter, that has that built into the inside... Do those still tear like the originals? Cuz I have one sitting next to my bike waiting for install, wondering if I need to fashion one of these devises up first.

The filters from Mikes's are improved but if it were me I would make or buy a shield. I'm using Mike's improved filter plus a shield on my own XS. Extra insurance and no reduction of oil flow.

I realize this is an old post, but I am interested in one of those shields if still available.
