Weak charging system

Well, it would seem so. Test some more and again. Make sure the slip rings are clean and push the test probes hard into them. If you're concerned about marring the soft copper surface, probe along the edges. The brushes don't rub there. Before I passed final judgement on the rotor, I'd want to be absolutely sure. I don't think it would pass the "slap" test if it was totally dead so maybe your testing procedure was flawed. I'd pull the alternator off (just 2 screws) so the rotor was fully exposed and easy to access for the testing. You can just set it off to the side as shown below with the wires still hooked up .....
