Project Canuck- 84 XS650 Project Build

Indeed - and even during each ride (particularly on cool days) the tach is noticeably more responsive after a few miles.

I know that many folks have opened their instruments up - but I'd hate to risk cracking the metal rim that secures the two halves together.

That may be the case Gary. Running it on the drill for a couple of minutes took away the jumpyness in the needle so it is "Breaking in".

That's a good idea, Might have to give it a try on the 1978 that has a tach that seems to stick in one place and is sluggish to drop to zero when bike is shut off.

Makes sense. When I first got the bike the weather was still hot and the tach worked fine. It is much cooler here now so I suspect the dampening grease gets a little stiff and needs some time to thin out. At least that is what I am going with for now. Let's see what happens when I can actually ride this thing.

And Pete, I didn't forget about the polishing notes, will try to get to something shortly.

My tach was really sluggish as well in spite of lubing the cable well after waking her up again Canuck. It had sat for 8 or 9 years.
After some miles it responded well again.

All good now. Ran it on the drill with a fresh battery for a few minutes and now responds nicely to quick up and down changes. No more jumping or slow to return to zero. Guess it just needed a good workout.

In case anyone is ever looking for a replacement seal for the air box covers.

Window screen spline is a perfect fit. It is a closed cell foam rubber and fits nicely into the groove. You then push it down with a spline wheel or just push it down with a flat blade screw driver. Just want to make sure you actually push it in the groove and not compress it in. Once you mount it on the box it will push to where it needs to.

Air box in and thought you would want to give her a listen. Very smooth running in my opinion for a 34 year old engine. Sometimesvideo does not do it justice. Still need to put the filters in but she settles right into a nice idle with no surging and tracks nicely. Still needs a little tuning and syncing but starting off with good settings.

Hmmmm....it doesn’t seem to work Joe.

Oh well - great idea on the screen spline!
What was the error Pete?

It should work. I just signed out of my Google Account and it still loaded. Need to click on the video when it shows up??

If it still does not work I will put it on YouTube with a link.
