What have you done to your XS today?

Installed rear star wheel to match the front with Omars front to rear wheel conversion.

Very nice! I had a set of star mags on my ‘76, way back when. Sure wish I had that bike back!

Temps got up to 15 today, so I rode the '76 over to the Shell station to get my last of the season fill of no ethanol V Power. In a medley of positivity, I had shut off the petcocks a little way down the road from home and as I snicked it into neutral turning in my drive, the engine used up the last of the gas.
Done for the season.

Cycle Gear called. The Shinko 230 is mounted and balanced on the front wheel and ready to be installed back on "The SG". Too bad I'm watching the grandson. Hmmmm he's good for a road trip..

I havent checked in here for a while. It’s been a crazy busy month. My front wheel is wobbling worse now, def out of true, so no interstate commuting, but I’ve been doing plenty of
Riding around town. She’s basically been a turnkey, 1 kick start daily rider for the last 3 months. I took her to work this morning and a few times last week. I took my daughter out last weekend to take pictures of the bike with the beautiful fall foliage, and then realized I’d missed my opportunity to be in the 2019 Calender already. Guess I’ll shoot for 2020. I decided to be “Ghost Rider” this year for halloween. I rode around town with this costume on last Sat when all the bars here in Iowa City do their costume contests. People absolutely loved it. This skull mask fits my head like a glove, so I can wear my helmet over it without any issues at all. This was me with my daughter and girlfriend before trick or treating last night. I was up till 1:00 AM Tues night making that bat costume for my daughter. It was a crowd pleaser. My absolutley gorgeous girlfriend was Stevie Nicks.

... My front wheel is wobbling worse now...

Back in the '70s, the "interrupted rib" type front tires had the nasty tendency of developing "tire scalloping", inducing shimmy. Closeup pic of your front tire shows discolorations on the leading edge of the interrupted ribs, indicating possible scallops.

A closeup pic of your front tire ribs would help.
As gggGary mentioned, best solution is a new tire.
There IS a zero-cost trick around this...

I DO greatly appreciate everyones input, and I will take it into consideration, though I am pretty confident the wheel IS out of true. I can see the hoop of the WHEEL, not just the tire, waving back and fourth In relation to the forks/fender, as the hub stays still, as I roll down the road. I have tried shaking the wheel back and fourth in the forks, and I have not detected any noticable play, so I think the bearings are good. I initially tried adjusting just a few spokes myself, which I believe just made it worse. I will see if I can take a closeup pic of the tire this afternoon, but I will also try to make a short video of the front wheel while riding so you can see what I am seeing.

Rode "The SG" to Carl's Jr for breakfast. First ride with the new SHINKO 230 front tire. Short ride, but first impressions are favorable. When the shop installed the tire they didn't have the weights to properly balance the wheel. They moved the one weight that was on the wheel to get some balance. They didn't a heavier or another weight to do a proper balance. I thought that was odd. I think I'll try some bead balance in the tube.

When I had issues with my front wheel, I had just had the rims trued prior to having the tire installed. I wasn's sure if it was the rim or tire. I put a zip tie on my forks and cut it to length where it rested against the rim, then gave it a spin. Give that a try.

Ok, I totally failed to take pictures or video for y’all, mostly due to the fact that I barely had time enough last week to get the wheel off to bring to the powersports store to get trued. I picked it up today and reinstalled and problem solved. No more wobble or vibration. Looks like my diagnosis was correct.

Got a few things done today. Added a mirror on the throttle side, scotchbrite the valve covers and changed clutch worm gear. Had a problem with this one. Purchased a 1L9 assembly from an XS 400 and modded per 5Twins suggestions. **edit I am a total idiot. I was taking material off the bottom of the female worm not the metal top to allow the male gear to increase to take up free play. Just read the thread again. Dang it! Lol **Just couldnt get it to work had too much free play and angle was at best 90 deg just needed that extra 1/8" to take the slack off. Used the female part and stock gear and now all is better. The originalfemale worm was cracked and housing was bent giving me crappy clutch action when warm. Gonna be months before I can try again or a warm day. Had ridges on the left side cover and sanded them down. All in all a good day that I have been trying to get in the garage for a month! 20181112_170506.jpg 20181112_152808.jpg 20181112_152011_HDR.jpg 20181112_151645.jpg

image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg Since the weather has been crappy here forever, I decided to do some rejetting of my carbs along with other maintenance. Got about 1000 miles on my foam filter mods. Notice how the dirt sticks to the oily foam where it enters the air box.
The fuel filters have been in for about 15K miles. I'm changing them and the lines. Notice the chunks of dirt and rust. My tank was rusty inside because it sat for 24 years. During my initial rebuild, I poured in a cup of aluminum roofing nails and shook it till I got tired each day for 3 days. Then rinsed it with 50:1, 2-stroke gas. The little filters inside on the petcocks were trash, so I ripped them off. In case you're wondering, yes the petcocks were removed before the shake down.
In my post, "Carb slides slightly Eskew", I show Picts of the carb slides I used from a 75.

The rubber bellows were not aligned properly from the factory, (I assume), making the slide crooked in the carb. I think I have that licked with some excellent suggestions from all you guys. 12 heads are better than 1.
