Pushing Oil-Probable Cause

Yes, there's a good likelihood that you have degradation in these items, and they are not expensive to replace.

I'm anticipating that we here in the Syracuse area (not sure what part of NY you are in) will have a couple low-50's days left to take a short spin.
I hope so. I'm in Bovina, NY (Delaware County), about 50 miles NW of Kingston, NY off Rt 28.

Hi Christen. Before buying all that stuff, try removing the spark plug wires from the caps and coils. Then cut off a 1/2" on both ends, then reconnect. It worked for me. I do that on my new wires, too. Can't hurt, no cost! Good luck.
Good suggestion. I will do this first. Are a lot of older XS's owners converting ignitions from points to electronic?

Bovina !
I ride through Bovina about 10 or more times a year on my road trips through the Catskills.
In fact, I drove through last week on a sunny day with my Mazda Miata, and stopped at the country store for a glass of milk and one of her excellent cookies.

I wrote a travel photo-story about the store last year. Forgot which thread it was....

Christen, you live in one of the greatest riding areas in the Northeast !

I switched to the Pamco combo ignition/advance. And with the new coil, you boost the voltage to the plugs from about 12KV to 80KV. Not to mention never having to buy and set points.
Actually, I've never had a problem with the points, it was the centrifugal advance that was never consistent.

I have relatives in Palenville, just east of Hunter mountain. In fact, I used to ski at Hunter at least once or twice a year on week days only, of course, in the 80's and 90's. I plan to truck my bike up to North Jersey next year and do some cruising in the Catskills and Adirondacks. I also had a permanent campsite on Great Sacandaga Lake in the 90's. I'd like to cruise up there too.

Yes, many are converting their points system to electronic, usually a Pamco. I ran the points for the first few years I had my 650, then switched to a Pamco. It's been about 10 trouble-free years since. At that time, the E-advance hadn't come out yet so I continue to use my old original advance unit. I know how to "care and feed" it so it hasn't given me any problems. I also shimmed the excess end play out of my advance rod which seemed to smooth out the advance operation. If I was to get a new Pamco, I guess I would base my decision on whether or not to get the E-advance version on the condition of the advance unit. I have no problem with continuing to use an original advance unit if it's still in good shape.

Palenville
Palenville is in a beautiful area, too!
Just a bit south, as you know, is the famous Platte Clove Rd, also known as Devil's Kitchen. Not a road for the faint-hearted.
I drove it down-hill once on my FJR.

A bycylist's description:

Platte Clove Road, aka Devil's Kitchen, is quite possibly the most hellacious climb in New York State, and one of the most difficult climbs in the Northeast, with over 1200 feet of climbing, most of it steeper than 12% grade. Several sections exceed 22% grade as the climb ascends the north side of Platte Clove. The climb was used in the 1990 Tour de Trump, where it gained notoriety when several pro riders, without the benefit of compact cranks, were forced to get off their bikes and walk. The climb was featured in Stage 2 of last year's Tour of the Catskills. The climb begins south of the town of Palenville at the intersection of County Route 33 and West Saugerties Road. Note that access to the road is seasonal and it is officially unmaintained from November 1 to April 15.

It is worth experiencing at least once. Watch for landslides.

Whah?? Theres another Angus here? I've been gone too long. I've been clearing out the heard. Sold my little 650 chop for 500. Trying to sell my 1980 special 650. Getting a 1972 xl250 motorsport up and running for winter fun. The xs1-b is snug as a bug under a (welding blanket) rug. Started third kick the other day

I remember which thread it was, now
It was posting #65 in my "New Game Post a picture of your XS with and Old Garage"

Dude,
I enjoyed your travel album and familiar pictures of Russel's Store. My wife and I were there yesterday for sandwiches. That's Jason behind the counter and Joy, a friend of ours, with the red purse.Small world. Yes there are some great roads snaking through this area. I'm looking forward to exploring more of it.
Thanks!
