Frozen 17mm Rotor Nut removal

Ring to ring.... forget the terminal...

Oh wait - you know what, I originally thought that the terminal I was working on was the inner ring because the wire tucks deeper into to the winding. Then I tested and got a closed circuit so I assumed that the terminal was the out ring terminal.

But I am simply testing my multi meter by touching the inner ring terminal and the actual inner ring! Jeeze.

Try resolderin' the other terminal.

You can't tell which terminal goes to which ring from the face. You have to take it apart to find out...

Or use the meter term. to ring and mark em so you don't forget

Ok resoldered the other, still OL.

There are a number of great sources mentioned on the forum for replacement rotors. Rewinding, MikesXS, Ricks Rotors, eBay etc. I’m thinking new but an curious what you all think is the best route?

Given the choices out there, I'd go with a reputable rewound.

I wish rewinding here locally in the Pacific Northwest was an option. I visited two reputable electric motor shops and told "no way" ..
Then I ordered a Chinese made rotor off Amazon. Garbage ! Looked it and it didn't fit the key. Trust that the taper was on ? Not me.
Finding a "good" used rotor was a challenge. Took awhile.
I hope you do !

Put one of those "chin-con" rotors (from Ricks?) on resto. Yup had to file the keyway open, use solvent to clean off overspray, and the inside of the taper was rather crude.
Has gone over 5,000 miles so far.

I just checked my database of suppliers and there is place called Racetech Electric in Carlsbad Calif. that lists XS650 rotors for $99. That may be the Chinese supplier place.

But there was another place that did rewinding of old bike rotors - it sticks in my mind that it was in Georgia (Atlanta?) and apparently, they are really good.

Does that ring a bell with anyone?

Sounds very familiar. I do remember with a name like "Race Tech" I expected quality as Race Tech suspension components have a great history and reputation.
I suppose I am very particular but the finishes on the contact rings was very rough as well. I really did not trust that it was balanced .
After all this is not an alternator bolted on a bracket in front of your truck engine, Its on the crankshaft of a very exotic Yamaha XS650 Classic ! Right ?

;)

I just bought a rewound rotor for my 1980 Special from 650 Central for $175 after I send my old one back.

I was having the same problem, getting OL from the rotor until I held the multimeter points to the rings and it climbed to about 1.2 ohms.

I'm having another issue in getting the stator back on. I see the little keyway at the bottom, but it's not wanting to go on smoothly and square. Anybody else struggle with this? Tips?

THATS IT! XS650 Central uses the place in Alabama to do the re-winding. I have always understood that they did a good job.

they can be a bit snug, clean up mating surfaces with some fine sandpaper? use a bit of lube, LIGHTLY tap around perimeter with wood block.

Thanks RT, Gary and Pete. Now I understand why a rewind may be preferred. I know I saw a recommendation or 2 on here. I’ll keep searching. Grizld1 and I think 5Twins had a redo for a place in Texas
