Health Thread

Golden boy, I suffered through the exact same thing back in August of this year. Doc said I had a 98 percent blockage in my artery. I am very fortunate to be here. I ended up having a stent put in, and of coarse, an onslaught of meds. Baby aspirin, statin, 2 BP meds, and a cholesterol med. I drove my rider lawn mower for two hrs prior to attempting a 20 foot cut with the self propelled/push mower. Upon starting it I noticed a very strong force pushing dead center on my chest that was very uncomfortable. I briefly thought I had just pulled a muscle while pulling the starting cord. I proceeded to push on and after a 15 foot walk with the mower I bent over, hands on knees, and fought for breath like I just ran a 50 yard dash.my Mrs asked if I was okay and I asked her to call 911. I have no heart history in the family, and had a complete stress test, echo, and a test where they actually see your heart in video. Pretty bizarre to watch that by the way. My BP before hand was about 145/95, and my cholesterol came in at 145 after the incident. Doc said I appeared to be “genetically pre-disposed”. The whole episode came as a complete surprise.

Wow KC, very similar. Sometimes a plaque formation may not have enough calcium to be detected, but can still burst and clog coronary artery, and without symptoms.

Well if this is the place to post about medical problems guess it's my turn.

A few months ago I started noticing the pinky finger on right hand was not working right, had good grip but would not straighten out on its own. Was seeing another doctor about some headaches, another story all together, and just for fun asked him what he thought. Hey I had paid the co-pay and figured I'd get a free opinion. His reply was looks like ruptured tendon, need a hand surgeon.

So I called the orthopedic out fit that repaired my rotator cuff a few years back and after finding that two of their hand/wrist specialists were retiring in December I asked about the Doc that just joined in October, figured she would be around for some time!

Got an appointment for last Thursday, after some x-rays and sometime with her playing with my hand she said, I can fix that! Only problem is she would have to take the broken tendon from the pinky and reroute it over to the tendon for the ring finger. Won't be perfect but at least I won't be poking myself in the eye while washing my hair!

Went under the knife Wednesday morning. now I'm wrapped up from six inches below elbow to just short of finger tips. Hope next week when I see her again she can change it to a bit less of club! Not any real pain, more of an ache in upper part of arm and shoulder. Told drug store I would be not picking up the Oxycontin unless the Ibuprofen does not do the trick and actually stopped that for right now. I think the 2X IPA I had with supper is doing a better job right now.

Typing all this with left hand is a challenge! Spell-checker is getting a work out!

My new toy arrived. Dick Tracy watch. The future is here.

A little shake of the wrist, and it comes on.
Smartwatch02.jpg

It has a heart rate monitor.
Smartwatch03.jpg

A green LED and sensor peek-a-boo's into the arm, sees the blood flow.

It also has a sleep monitor, and a buncha other stuff.

Unfortunately, missing the pharmaceuticals to cure the headache from reading the instructions...

My wife had a problem with her pinkey also, which was found to be Depuyetres Syndrome, a stiffening of the connective tissue which she was an injection of "Zylitol", I believe, to numb and disolve some of the connective tissue and the hand plastic surgeon as a hand doctor is called, then gently straightened the finger and splinted it. An orthopedic may work on a knee, hip or ankle, but the hand is much more complex, so that is the best doctor.

Well this finger did not have the stiffening, problem tendon was broke by the bone on the wrist. Finger would bend easy with no problem but not on it's own. And this doctor only works on hands and wrists.

You've got the right doctor. My hand doctor is also a sports medicine doctor. I needed a trigger finger release procedure. I was caulking around the tub making one long bead with a small tube of caulk. The next day, when I bent my right thumb, I had to straighten it out with my left hand. The tendon gets inflamed in a tight fitting sheath. It stays enlarged and the sheath must be sliced open to No problems after that. On your avatar, is that an XS-2?

That bike is or was a 1972! The picture sure does not do it justice! It was way worse than it looks in the avatar!

Maybe a close-up of the rear wheel will give a better idea of what it really looked like when I hauled it home!

If you want that rim let me know, I'm sure it will buff out with a little work!

Thanks, anyway, Ks. I had two 72,s and am thinking of getting one back from my brother in law, who paid me $650 for it about 30 years ago and put it in a storage garage. He never used it and I'll never know why he even bought it. But getting back to your's; is there a chance to revive that bike? If so, you're my hero. When I had three 650's running, I brought one of my 72's to my friends house to see if I could keep it in his garage. He lived on a hillside next to a lake and the back of the garage was in the hillside. I had just cleaned the bike and waxed it, dropped it off and came back in a week to have a beer by the fire at his house. I opened the garage to find the entire bike was tarnished from condensation in just one week...

Wow, 2M that's pretty sophisticated. Those things aren't cheap. You must be a rich and desireable man. :)

Pneumonia: This is an infection that inflames the lung sacs of one or both lungs. Air sacs may fill with fluid or puss, Causing a cough with phlegm or puss, fever, chills and difficulty breathing. There is no mistake for the raunchy odor if you have puss in your lungs. Pneumonia can range in seriousness from mild to life threatening. It is most serious for infants, young children and people over age 65 years old, especially those with health problems and weakened immune systems. Signs and symptoms of pneumonia vary from mild to severe, depending on factors such as the type of germ causing the infection, your age and overall health. Mild signs and symptoms are similar to a cold or flu but will last longer.
Signs and symptoms may include:
  • Chest pain when you breathe or cough
  • Confusion or changes in mental awareness (over age 65)
  • Cough with phlegm
  • Fatigue
  • Fever, sweating and shaking, chills
  • Lower than normal body temperature (over age 65 and people with weakened immune systems)
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Shortness of breath
There are also chemical pneumonias from inhaling toxic fumes. If you suddenly experience burning in your throat, sinuses and chest, and start to cough violently and have been exposed to a noxious gas you should call the poison control hotline in your area. You will be able to speak to a doctor, or pharmacist who volunteer their time to answer your questions and give you advice. I wound up doing exactly that this fall, after cleaning my siding with polyethylene glycol. The pharmacist told me the irritation would resolve itself in a few days.
As an x-ray tech, we would have to evaluate a patient before x-raying them to verify they are getting the right exam. We would observe visible signs of a possible pneumonia and report them to the radiologist. We would look for dark circles under the eyes, blue tinged lips and finger nails and ask the patient if their phlegm sinks in the toilet. If it is denser than water, it could be an indicator of pneumonia. Bacterial pneumonia is very serious as it can overwhelm a patient in a few days. That is what happened to Jim Hensen, the muppeteer, and voice of Kermit the frog.

Some interesting points made in Mailman's "Flu Blues" thread.

So, I thought to put some things of concern for the baby-boomers in here.

Our childhood triple-whammy, as though we didn't have enuff troubles.

1 - The long-term aftereffects of DES (Diethylstilbestrol) administered to our mothers.

https://desaction.org/des-sons/

2 - The early introduction of and mass implementation of PVC in the plumbing, eating utensils, and drinking straws.

3 - The polio vaccine.

And, if you like conspiracy theories, the connection to Lee Harvey Oswald.

If you dig deep enuff into these things, you'll find a cornucopia of intrigue and cover-ups.

Hi 2many,
what I reckon about those things is:-
1) I'm safe from DES unless it was administered back in 1937.
2) Today's plastic water pipe is less harmful than the lead pipe it replaced.
3) Routine immunizations have a small but real chance of making the recipients sick or of killing them.
The vastly greater risk of the un-immunized getting sick or dying can only be avoided by living where at least 97%
of the people ARE immunized. Thus those who refuse immunization are social parasites.
As to conspiracies, how can you PROVE that you ain't just a brain in a jar being fed lies by a computer program?
On a personal note, the Aliens have put a chip in my head that feeds them my life experience.
The chip is undetectable. I only know it's there because every traffic light I drive up to turns red.
And that's more proof than there is that Elvis is still alive.

Very interesting, 2M, DES and Polio Vaccine, up there with other cover ups, like Thalitamide and dental x-rays. Not so much the x-rays as the focal point of them. It was learned that focusing the primary beam towards the brain was causing brain tumors, so now all dental x-ray positions point away from the brain. But the polio vaccine may have been also a calculated risk. It is standard operating procedure to calculate the probable lawsuits and anticipate the cost before creating a drug or other potentially harmful product and include that cost in the equation to estimate your potential profit.

Just saw my brother last night, who takes good care of himself, eating right, exercising at the gym, daily and keeping an ideal weight. He went for routine blood work and the doctor told him his sugar was a little high, which could indicate onset type ll diabetes. The doctor's recommendation was go for a walk after dinner, which can lower your blood sugar level.
