650rider

Nice work Travis! After reading your posts I like what you're doing.
I wish I would have read this thread before I reposted my re-build thread here... my bad!
Keep it up!

I appreciate all the work you have done and can only imagine what you WILL do. I was a supporter of 650rider through paypal via a subscription and if/when you'd like to do that put me on the list. I don't mind putting my money where my mouth is. It gives me the abilty to pick the brain of many experienced XS wrenchers. :bike:

Travis would you rather mine the info from 650rider or would/should those who have diagrams, tips, tricks go ahead an post photos to their albums? The tip/tech write ups. Just post as a thread and link to those threads as you are doing now? Or posted as pdf's that could be saved or printed by a memeber/user?

imho it would save time and add to the knowledge base if members would go ahead and repost to this site.

weedendrider, I should have addressed this earlier. A lot of people don't have backups of what they had posted on 650rider, that is why I posted for people not to go crazy when it is back up because I could image 200 new threads in one day and setting up the redirects would be crazy. If you have a tech write up saved on your computer that is also on 650rider and want to post it here, that's fine as long as you aren't concerned with saving he replies that your tech write up received over at 650rider. If you repost almost identical information here, that thread from 650rider won't get transferred but a redirect will be put in it's place and those replies will be lost. (Well not lost, because I'll always have access to them, but they won't be displayed on either site).

Now maybe you posted a long tech article and received just a few insignificant replies that didn't really add to the tech article. Maybe you then posted a little more information on say post 10 in that thread. Re-posting it over here might be the way to go since it'll allow you clean up the tech article by merging the two relevant posts and not transferring the insignificant posts.

If you go that route, once I start the 650rider transfer forum, be sure to indicate that this information has already been re-posted here and provide the link to the thread on 650rider, as well as the link to the thread here. Otherwise, that information on 650 rider will probably get identified as worth saving and be transferred here and we'll have two almost identical threads.

Now for things like build and restoration threads and certain tech threads, you might want to have the thread transferred here so that it can preserve all of the discussion and updates that typically go into one of those threads.

inxs and Skull said it well:

...in some ways it would be better to recreate the knowledge with the advantage of hindsight...i keep many of my posts filed on a reserve harddrive or usb stick...

As i said earlier the info from 650rider it can never be recreated as the treads themselves evolve with ideas and information that can never be read in a write up.

So I'm trying to accommodate both views while keeping the redirects organized. If someone created a thread over there that would be nice to clean up and rework into a great tech article, then by all means post it here in whatever manner you wish. If there is a thread there that evolved quite nicely and contains a lot of tech from a lot of different members, and someone wants to preserve that, hopefully we can get it all transferred over just like it was.

So once we get 650rider is back up, the plan is for people to identify which threads and information should be transferred and which ones the owners want to recreate here. If something is recreated, I'll need the link for the thread there and for the thread here.

So if you have saved content that you already know you want to re-create here rather than having me transfer it, go ahead and post it! Just remember that once the 650rider transfer forum is started, to post in there with links to both threads.

I hope all of that makes sense to everyone and if not, it should all come together once the forum is set up and people start to identify the content to be transferred over and the content to be re-created here.

Now having said all of that. There is the possibility that the transfer process won't go as smoothly as I hope it will and we'll end up having to re-create everything here anyway or just leave it on 650rider as and archived site. So I guess the list will be of content to be re-created no matter if the transfer works or not, and content to be transferred if possible.

Why do these responses end up being so long?!

I just re-read your post and realized that I didn't even really answer your questions so here goes:

Travis would you rather mine the info from 650rider or would/should those who have diagrams, tips, tricks go ahead an post photos to their albums? The tip/tech write ups. Just post as a thread and link to those threads as you are doing now? Or posted as pdf's that could be saved or printed by a memeber/user?
I think I addressed this pretty well except for the PDFs. Most tech stuff should probably be a thread so it can be expanded upon and clarified, but if you have something that is pretty well refined and complete, then a PDF is fine.

imho it would save time and add to the knowledge base if members would go ahead and repost to this site.

If the scripts all work fine for transferring threads to here, it doesn't really matter if one thread is transferred or a 1000. Having the computer transfer over threads (if it works) would save time rather than having a lot of members spending a lot of time transferring the content themselves. So I guess it comes down to who's time are we saving? Anyway, I think content should be moved here in a manner that will help create a better XS650 resource and best serve the site members rather than worrying about which is quicker. :bike:

I just came off that site, after downloading a couple of thread's for my own vault. Had to search for them, but the google search is working. Made a couple of file's for the electrical stuff I wanted. One is the type.& length of wire needed to do a rotor rewind. Second is the thread on the trasister's in the TCI box. Not letting them get away again. 'Course, hindsite is allway's 20/20.:doh::doh:

Guys! It's only back up very temporarily!

I have control of the domain but not the hosting right now. The company Gerald used to have it hosted through turned it back on probably just to copy all the files in order to get them to me so I can host them using a different company. It'll be down again very soon and back up after I get the files and get them hosted. Sorry for the false hopes of it being back (I didn't know that company was going to turn it on temporarily). It should be back up again in a few days but will be read-only. Don't bother posting there now because it'll probably be lost.

Thanks goes to Teecat Danno............. and it was more like a light beer when craving a Rum :D just got a look then it was gone :banghead::laugh:

thats ok i was able to copy the tech article on forward controls i have been dying for to microsoft word so i could print it out!!! im glad i was able to catch it at just the right time, and that i just happened to need to print it and decided to save it! lucky me!!! keep up the excellent work Travis!

Update on the situation:

I will be taking control of 650rider.com!

I've worked out an agreement with Gerald and we are currently working on getting everything transferred over to me. The amount of the transaction was for much less than he previously wanted, and I'd like to leave it at that. This will be quite a process so bear with me as it all happens. I'm going to move this thread into The Lounge to take some heat off of it, and will eventually create another thread with more information on what's going to happen and give the members here a chance to give some input on the whole thing. That's all I have for now. :bike:
Travis,
Just thanking you for taking the effort to save what info you can from the 650rider site.

Glad to see that all the posts to 650Rider are saved. Many thanks Travis! I didn't post there much, but did browse through it on occasion and there was a lot of good stuff there. I recently saw a post on the 650GarageUSA forum related to the possibility that you might acquire 650Rider and decided to check this site out. I'm glad I did.

Cheers... Dan
