Quick question I am replacing my clutch perch How do I get the handle grip off to do it It's stock 1975
Should I heat it with a hair dryer and rotate carefully ?
If it gets destroyed I can get another I'm sure but maybe it will come off fairly easy ?

Compressed air if the bars are hollow maybe and Soapy water while twisting a little ?
How would I get the compressed air from the front brake side
Can you can shove a WD40 straw between the grip and bar? Heat could help. New grips and a sharp knife.

Scott
would the wd40 eat the rubber grip up

Nozzle in a crack between the switch housing ?
Also, if you want to re use the grip, I'd stay with soapy water as lubes will have to be completely rinsed out

I did the WD-40 trick before, it works great. You can stick that skinny straw in there and they come right off. As soon as you get it off, just wipe it off and wash any residue off with hot soapy water and you’re good to go.
When you reinstall them , my preference for grip glue is hair spray. It makes the grips slide on easy and takes a few days to really set up, but then the grips are locked on nice.

I use the WD40 for both removal and install. I jam a small long screwdriver or awl between the grip and bar then spray the WD in the gap. Sometimes you need to stick the screwdriver in at multiple spots around the grip if it's been glued, to break the glue joint free. For install, I spray the WD in the grip, wipe a little on the bar, then install. Once the WD dries, the grip stays stuck on there just fine. I've never had it harm a grip.

For open ended grips, I have used a piece of a wire coat hanger, cut and bent into a 6" straight piece with the end nicely rounded, then bent 90 degrees twice at the other end, to form a sort of hand crank. Then just jam the straight piece between grip and handle bar, wind the crank, and the straight part will move around the circumference, breaking the grip free. Pulling the grip with one hand, and cranking with the other soon gets the grip off.

Once again lots of good idea Don't know where I can get hairspray since I got rid of the spud gun I'll come with something
Thanks guys

I've never needed to glue any grips on. Maybe I've just been lucky but they've always stuck on there fine by themselves.

When you spray the WD40 in there, you'll need to "work" the grip, twist it back and forth, to break it free.

Ditto lately.
As a young dirt biker with used grips on & off I used glue like shoo goo. But good luck re using one after that

Yes, I can see the need to glue them on a dirt bike, never found it necessary on a street bike. The bone head P.O. of my latest 650 glued the grips on big time. I couldn't get them off and save them. That guy did some strange things to the bike. Seems he had a gasket sealer fetish, lol, putting it all over the place. He even sealed the round alternator cover to the bigger main cover (what was he thinking ???).

And the bars needed cleaning too I'll bet .
I Suppose the stickiest and nastiest glue Ive encountered was OMC marine out drive gasket sealer . Now that would stick em !
You paint it on with the brush.. after you can manage the lid back off

I've always used a bit of gasoline: open up a crack with a screwdriver, poor some gasoline in there and twist, they come off easily. Same procedure to put back on. The nice thing about using gasoline is it evaporates quickly, no need to clean off (like with WD40, which is actually not possible when installing back on the handlebars). No glue necessary if they fit properly.
