I was thinking about installing two air pods on my 1981 and eliminating the stock filters and air boxes.
Not sure what a good brand will be as a lot of threads I have read discount the K&N pods.
I am also not sure what to do with the breather line that ran from the top of the engine to the original air boxes?

Yes, the K&N pleated style pod doesn't work well on our CV carbs. They rely on a smooth flow of air to lift the slides properly. The pleated pod gives a turbulent air flow. Best pods to use are the UNI straight foam type. For your BS34 carbs, you would want the UNI UP4229 or UP4229ST (dual layer). These pods use a very fine black foam. The special foam filter oil they sell for them is too thick and can clog them. Just use a simple 50-50 mix of motor oil and gas to oil them.

If you do change to the pods, they will be letting more air in and some minor re-jetting will be needed. You will probably need to bump the mains up one size, maybe the pilots too.

For the breather hose, many of us add a power brake check valve to the end of the hose. Poise it over one of the pods and any oil mist or drips that might come out will just get recycled through the motor .....

5Twins - what is the correct size for the BS38 carbs that were used on earlier bikes?

Thanks,

Pete

The UP4200 or UP4200ST. These have a 2" I.D. mounting flange and fit on the BS38's like a glove. They can be forced on the BS34's, but you're doing just that - forcing them on and spreading the flange too much, straining it in my opinion. That's why I think the UP4229 is a better choice for the 34's. It has a larger I.D. (2 1/4") mounting flange. It fits loosely but tightens down fine.

Thanks 5T - that is perfect!

Foam pods on the BS34s, they're get a double-carburetion issue at about 3,500-4,000 rpm with the K&N style.

I always used the foam pods....without oil. I've not seen anything that will get thru those filters that could harm an engine. Oil is a bit messier.
