Did some testing on the coil this morning. Started out with coil at 55 degrees, 3.4 ohms and 3.5 amps current draw. Didn't want to make junk out of it by just running current through it till it fried so I ran current through for 3-5 minuets and then let it set for 3-5 minuets. After doing this a 8 or 10 times I ended up at 115 degrees, 4 ohms resistance and 2.8 amps. I also tapped on it with a ratchet handle during test. I can find nothing wrong with it.
I've still heard nothing from Pete. If no word from him by tomorrow morning I'll have to go to plan B. I'm sorry but if a company doesn't get back to you in a week I don't think they ever will. Shame it's a nice product.

A little progress today. This afternoon I got a email form Pete. No words of wisdom but at least there is no doubt he is aware of my problem.

Still nothing from Pete. Don't know what to think. I thought I've asked him nicely for help with a product he sold me. He didn't seem to have a problem taking my money, just seems to have a problem with after sales help. Oh well live and learn.
Now I have to go to plan B. In this case B stands for breaker points. I've got everything I need to put them back in except good springs for the advance. I found new OEM springs on Ebay, they are ordered. I'm sure down the rode I'll put a Boyer system on it, right now I fell a bit snake bit on electronic ignition.

Dang man! You did a great job with this bike and thread! Did i miss pictures of it all the way together? I flipped through the thread and saw a lot of pics but none “completed”. What i saw looks great though!

New exhaust showed up today. It's on and sounds good. Stainless looks a lot better than rusty paint. Since this is all on the side full access under motor and I can put a center stand back on it. Not an exact fit for a XS2. I need to finish making hanger bracket for it. Tomorrow going to install Boyer ignition. If that goes well phase 1 will be done. Should have a dependable daily rider again.

Got a few things done yesterday.
First thing was to finish exhaust bracket. Delkavic doesn't list the exhaust as fitting a XS2. As I figured I would have to make a bracket. I know the bolt looks kind of crappy. When I put the rear pegs on it I'll get a better looking bolt.

Next up was the Boyer ignition. It actually comes with a instruction sheet. http://www.boyerbransden.com/pdf/KIT00303.pdf
The kit has almost everything you need to install it. Only thing you need not in the kit is Loctite.

You need red for the rotor end of the threaded rod.

Blue for the other end. Not real wild about the threaded rod and the way it just clamps everything to the cam, no pin to make sure nothing slips. Another problem is holding the rotor stationary when tightening the nut on the other end of the threaded rod. Best way I could figure out was to use a needle nose pliers to hold the rotor in place when tightening the nut. It worked.

Next up was mounting the coil. Instruction sheet was a bit vague on that. I ended up making a mount out of 1/2 inch key stock and made spacers for standoffs.

Mounted the blue box and wired thing up. If I was to do this again I would move the coil to the rear for more clearance between it and the blue box.

Plus it comes with red plug caps

Bike fired right up, got the timing set and went for a 10 mile ride. Ran every bit as well as it did with the PAMCO. Maybe even a little smoother. Need some better weather so I can go for longer rides.
It did come with a sheet that had a web address for pics of how to mount the coil. I think their link is broken. I do not recommend trying to go there.

So, now that you’re out and about again, are you happy with the way it runs and rides? How about that pipe?
Very happy with it. Everything seems to be working great. Breaks work fine, suspension as good or better than I remember, I think with the modern tires it handles better than it ever did, fixing the broken frame probably helped. :rolleyes:The motor is not completely broke in yet. I've only had it to 5 grand a couple of times, but between 1500 and 4000 it's got a lot of torque and very responsive. Not sure I have it in me to wind her up to 8000 plus any more. I'm sure I'll take the 38 tooth rear sprocket off and replace it with a 34 in the future. Not many Sporty's around to race anymore. All in all I coudn't be happier. Everything I did to it worked great. Except the PAMCO, a Boyer fixed that though. The pipe has a very nice sound, I do have a problem with clearance for the the kicker, looking at possible fixes for that. E-start works great so not a pressing problem.

That sounds great! I’ve noticed that suddenly my bike feels like it is accelerating a little harder and revving a little more freely, the motor feels like it’s bedding in. I’m curious if you are using your decompression release?
I have my cable hooked up, but the adjustment backed off. It doesn’t seem to need it. It starts just as easily as my ‘77 does.

I've never had it hooked up. In fact the cable was removed before I bought the bike. I remember asking my brother why the cable was missing when I bought the bike from him. He said that the local Yamaha shop said it wasn't needed. The bikes started better without it. The E-start has always worked fine. I was going to ask you if you had tried yours without it.
