Mike`s XS & Dime City Cycles

I have a Morris Mag, 2 Boyer`s and a Hugh`s CDI. The first 3 are for the most part Fool Proof. CDI is not quite ready to fire yet. I liked the idea of a crank triggered ign and it was really easy to wire up. We`ll see.

I didn't like the price of Hugh's cdi, so I'm attempting to do my own. I also didn't like the parts he is using for his, so mine is based on a newer motorcycle, using the banshee flywheel as the starting point. So far I'm in it and the PMA for about the price of just a Pamco-E and a coil.

I'm also a little intimidated by Hugh's CDI price, and besides, it seems that they seem to be currently unavailable anyway.. (or, at least, they are whenever I look on his website)

Nothing wrong with XSCharge’s PMA (unless you’re a purist and think everything original on the XS650 is best). A number of companies sell the units...Mike’s, T C Bros, etc. It has nothing to do with Pamco ignitions. Mike’s and XS650 Direct sold Pamco ignitions and XSCharge PMA’s together as a package which lead some to think the two companies (Pamco and XSCharge) were related. No point in not getting an XSCharge PMA because you are upset (with the perception) that Mike’s ripped off Pamco Pete.

No I can’t. If Pete has stated that Mike’s ripped him off then that’s enough evidence for me. Legally proving that Pete was ripped off is an other matter all together. Replicated circuit boards with Pamco shown on them makes for a good argument though. Not sure if the Pamco name is trademarked.

It’s unfortunate that this happened. Running a small business is tough enough without unscrupulous wanks messing with your profit and reputation. I wish I had bought a few Pamco units with integrated e advance directly from Pete for future projects.

ME TOO!!!

Geeezz, I'd buy a couple today if Pete would open up his line again and I'll bet there are quite a number of folks on this forum who would also...

<PAMCO Pete - are you listening?>.

You'd need Pete's ignition/advancer code, and an IC programmer with cabling/connectors to flash the firmware into the microprocessor. A career path for most folks. Familiarity with 8051, PIC, and Arduino is helpful. To give you an idea of what's involved, you could go thru mrriggs "junkyard ignition" thread...

Actually...a guy can build his own PMA far cheaper than what they CHARGE, lol. So sticking it to a company with business practices that hurt their customers and suppliers alike, is point enough for me.

As far as PMA and ignition, I recommend VAPE. They offer 3 versions, a standalone PMA, a 277 rephase PMA/CDI, and a 360 PMA/CDI, see link here: https://www.vape.eu/yamaha-xs650-15kg-rotor-complete-system

Made in Europe (originally designed by a German company, Powerdynamo) Czech Republic/Czechoslowakia actually has a very good reputation for quality engineering, despite their eastern block history. I have a couple of Brno and Cz rifles, and a TOZ lathe. Good stuff!
More to the point, I have been running a Powerdynamo/Vape PMA/CDI for years on my RD350. Haven't changed a sparkplug yet, after more than 5000 km. Extremely easy starting, dead reliable. No need for a battery. The Vape kit for XS is pretty expensive, but you get what you pay for.

I have not bought things from Mike's for years. I don't like the way they operate. Lack of ethics is a biggie. I will only buy from there as a last resort.
The deal with Pete is just another nail ion their coffin.
Even when shopping on Ebay or other places you have to be careful.
A lot of sellers buy stuff from Mike's and sell it without telling where it came from. Some are easy to spot. They use Mike's item numbers.
There are some who buy from Mike's and admit to doing so. They have found some items are ok.
