PAMCO 10th Anniversary New Product

Yes - this is a very common problem and I have to say that while the PAMCO system works great, the most challenging part of the installation is trimming that pin. It is hardened and one of the pins in my cam absolutely would not come out (actually the pin on the LH side fell out on its own and I lost it for several months - but the one on the RH end of the cam - the one that was too long - would not come out no-way/no-how).

Anyhow - I had to go at it with a Dremel and a grinding wheel and it was a PITA because there isn't much room and it is very close to the RH camshaft seal which I did not want to damage.

Fortunately, I took (I think it was gggGary) the advice of a Forum member and bought several spare pins from Mikes / XSDirect so even though I lost one - I had a spare. Also - I would warn people to NOT remove the spark plugs prior to installing a PAMCO system. If my LH plug had been out - that loose pin would almost certainly have gone down into the spark plug hole and I would have been forced to remove the head to get it out.

PAMCO PETE: could you please make the slot in the rotor just a couple of mm longer to eliminate this problem? It would make the installation of your excellent system a total breeze.

Pete

Thanks, Pete.

I will add that the stock locating pin on the cam needs to be modified in order for this to work. My stock pin and the several I have from Mike's don't fit in the groove on the advance replacement rotor. They need to be cut down as they are too long.

...
OK. I will have the slots made a little deeper on the next order of caps. Keep in mind that there are pins of two different lengths, so I do not want the shorter pin to be loose when you install the cap.

I tried to remove a shorter pin from Mikes aftermarket advance rod, but they will no come out. And they have a distored end anyway. Makes them slippy in the Pamco rotor imho. My stock pins are straight and flat on both ends, but too long.

Great point about the spark plug, Max. I lost a advance weight c-clip on day down the rabbit hole. Had a little magnet hamdy though.

Thanks Pete - I'd also add a bold-faced warning about leaving the danged spark plugs in place while doing the install.

Cheers,

Pete

Yes, it has been 10 years since the introduction of the first PAMCO ignition. That product is still available and is going strong. Since then the PAMCO E-Advancer was introduced to eliminate the mechanical advancer. Now, it's time to eliminate the E-Advancer external blue box of tricks and offer an integrated E-Ignition that combines the original concept of a simple and easy to install electronic ignition system for the venerable XS650 with the E-Advancer. Here is the new E-Ignition. All of the features of the E-Advancer mounted on the original points plate with no external box of tricks.
Using the latest surface mount technology, the new E-Ignition has the same chip as the E-Advancer mounted on a PC board with the original PAMCO. Simple three wire installation with no external box of tricks. Battery, ground and coil.

Sorry for what may be a silly question but ow do i get one ?

Turn back time........
So what now. LOL that a little bit of a bummer. I have the electric advanc and electric ignition and I think I burned it up trying to start it with a low no good battery. I purchase a new battery and a new coil (i thought mine was bad and it was not) and if pamco is no longer available. What would be my next logical step?

looks like a genuine Pamco E-Advance............. PamcoPete Had a 2 year warranty on his Pamco's................

The questions are, ........when was it bought??.......is it still under warranty??.........And the big question is ......Is Pete fulfilling the warranties now he has closed up shop????????

I bought a PAMCO with e-advance from him recently. It has a problem, quits working when hot. I have pleaded with him for help.

No meaningful response from him. I would guess that he is not going to honor any warranty's.

I bought it directly from you. In March or April. You are aware of this. Go to my thread and read everything I did and how I tried to contact you. You even emailed me back once.

Would you like me to post your nonsensical email you sent me.

Since getting it running it as developed a problem. When it warms up it looses spark and dies. If you go to my thread at xs650.com and start at post 317 it will explain everything.

What I wanted from you was a simple explanation of what your problem was. The thread you referred to is several pages long and has at least 320 posts including post 317 which reads like your life story. I'll PM you directions on returning the unit. If you have any other Emails from me that you would like to post, please do so.

The simple explanation of the problem was in the email.
The reason I wanted you to click on the link was so you could get straight to page 16 and go to post 317 so you would not have to go through the entire thread. In 10 or so minuets you could have read what the problem was and what I had done to diagnose it with the help of the forum.
I'll send the unit back to you next week.

I like Pete, I like his ignitions, I bought them for both of my bikes and I have sung their praises on my build threads.

I have to say that this whole exchange has been puzzling to me. I have followed Greg’s XS2 build from the beginning. He’s a good guy and a good mechanic. We were both rebuilding our XS2’s at the same time.
We both bought the exact same ignition directly from Pamco. Mine worked perfectly, his did not.

Ok these things happen. He did his due diligence and did a very thorough job of trying to diagnose the problem first, before contacting Pamco. The members of the forum tried helping him.

When he finally did try to contact Pete, he did so in a respectful manner. He wasn’t mad, he simply had a problem that he could not rectify. He emailed the Pamco business support , he PM’d Pete here on this forum, he tried talking to Pete on various threads where the Pamco ignition would come up.

No response, crickets chirping. A good deal of time passed, too much really. Finally not seeing any other option but to put his points back in or go with a Boyer,
He chose a Boyer. I know he really wanted his first choice, the one he already paid for. Who wouldn’t?

I tried clicking on the link he supplied, didn’t seem hard. Sure there was some of the usual banter that goes on in these threads, but Greg summed up his troubles in about three posts.

I know Greg has been upset about the lack of post purchase support. I don’t really blame him, I think he did all the right things and was unnecessarily disappointed.

There I said it, go ahead and throw rocks at me.
