Trip odomotor knob

Does anybody have an idea on fixing or reinforcing the knob that resets trip odometer
I have 75 and the original one broke just old and brittle
The new one I bought split on the end where it connects to the odometer and then rounded out that end so it would not work
I have a new one coming OEM should I just use electrical tape on the end to maybe stop it from splitting again?

I also have a problem with the reset knob on my 81. My neighbor stopped by yesterday and picked the knob up off of the shop floor. I believe it was loose and fell on when I started the bike the day before. Does the knob thread back on will I need to disassemble the speedometer?

It screws on. What I don't remember is if the shaft is blocked clockwise so you can screw knob on. If not, you might be able to hold the shaft with small needle nose if you just raise it out of the bucket a bit.
