xs650 sidecar

Hi Ken,
see me at post #5, eh?
XS series fork tube diameters:- XS650, 34 then 35mm. XS 750/850/1100 are 36 & 37mm.
XS 760/850/1100 Specials have forward mount axles. The Standards axles are underneath like an XS650s
Reduce trail (move axle forwards) by fitting Special fork legs into Standard "trees.
Alas, this locks you into running the Special's Weird Harold swivelling tapered pad brake calipers.
One wonders how many newbies had a WTF? moment on seeing those tapered pads
on his first Special, ordered new ones and found they were meant to be like that?
mmm , have to have a better look at the 1100 forks iv got ,do you think that slight forward placement of the axle would make much difference ,that's the good thing about the 1100 front end iv got , it is a direct change over triple tree and all,was on a 73 tx ,already swapped it over to a 74 tx project bike so no reason why it wont go on my 78 447 frame with no dramas , just might have to rebuild the forks after sitting for so many yrs ,will have to look at the pads ,if taped will save me that wtf moment

Hi Ken, FLEA,
I did the fork thing on my XS11SG sidecar rig to decrease the trail by ~1-1/4" and yes, it steered noticeably lighter.
The XS760/850/1100s Standard and Special wheelbases are identical.
What you gain by the Special's forward axle you lose by it's shorter 'trees
the Yamaha trail reduction trick works by mix'n'matching a Special's forward axle mount fork legs with a Standard's longer 'trees.
To check the trail on the Fleabike's forks measure the wheelbase &/or compare the 'trees reach to a stock set.
And yes, if the forks have ATE pattern swivelling brake calipers the pads are tapered.
Tapered pads, I ask you, who dreams up this shit, eh?

ahh... that makes it easy without pulling things apart (swivelling pattern) as for measuring trees the xs,s mentioned are in short supply around here so measuring maybe a bit hard but you never know whats hidden in the sheds around here if going looking.. eg the s/car
