Jim's 1980 SG Miss September

Lookin' at yer work, I think you should take fix the knee yourself. I can't imagine you can find a doctor with your level of skill and pride in your work.

...and I can be the anaesthetist - my students tell me that my lectures can put anybody to sleep!

Hmmmm...maybe Rudi. I mean, even I find that bolt preload and Hertzian stress calculations just don’t have that “zing” they used to have for me.

Recommendations?
So... been pondering this since the ride with the new reg/rec. Prior to replacement, I was getting a little off idle stumble... and periodically a fair bit of poppin' and sputterin' when I grabbed a handful of throttle.... maybe a half--- 3/4 throttle. But it wasn't consistent. The off idle stumble was consistent. Gary suggested the washer under the needle fix and that worked a treat for off idle... cleared it right up. The odd part is the popping and wheezing with big pulls on the throttle.... sometimes it did it, and sometimes it powered up just like it's supposed to. I didn't clue into the correlation at the time it was happening (and I'm still not certain), but I'm starting to think the sputterin' was happening at the same time the charging system would drop out. It never sputtered even once during the hour and a half ride ... and I've had her out several times since. No amount of yanking and pulling on the throttle will cause even the slightest bit of misbehaving.... and other than the needle washers, the carbs haven't been touched since initial setup. Well, actually I had to redo the float heights also... but that didn't help. Only change was the reg/rec. Yeah... I'm gettin' long winded here, I'll cut to the chase...

I suspect my 40yr. old TCI coil was breaking down under load. At 14.5V, it could handle things... but not with just the battery. I've changed a few coils for breaking down under load and thinking back, that's what this feels like. It's 40yrs old... perhaps it's time to give it a rest.

So anyway.... What do you guys recommend as a replacement coil for the TCI system?

This is what came with both of my Pamco ignitions. Seems like a good coil, and I know they’re available on EBay.
Others will have their favorites I’m sure.

That’s the coil I have on Lucille and she runs well with it.

I did see a photo of a slick setup using a coil from a Gold Wing (dual output) and because the secondary connectors were along the axis of the coil (90 deg. to those on the Emgo shown above), it would be more compact.

I don’t recall where the photo is nor the year of the GL - but it was a Honda coil.

Thanks Pete. I remember someone talking about a Honda 4 coil. That's the one I want to find out more about.

This is the Honda coil used on the GL1500. I think it's marked MP08. It has a great reputation on the Honda forums. The two generations of Honda coils before these had very bad reputations. It was used on about 70 different Hondas. I usually pay about $10 each for them, sometimes less when I buy a set of three. They are small, compatible with your TCI ignition. Very reliable compared to most aftermarket coils.

This is a good seller, I've bought a lot from them.

Can the wires be changed easily Scott?

It appears that the secondary terminals are like the ones on pre-TCI Yamaha coils where you can “screw in” a new plug wire.

Thanks for the info Scott. That's what I was looking for.
Found this thread interesting. Apparently a Harley coil will also work.

Hey Jim
Here is the Accel Harley 140403S coil i fitted to my 79 SG. Almost a direct bolt on but had to space it a little bit back with the outlet lead just touching the tank. Had to get new 90° soft plug caps out of the coil. Also installed copper wires not the 8.8mm graphite that came with it but i had spares. I know not to use resistor caps and plugs but i do.
