Jim's 1980 SG Miss September

The Reckoning.
I've debated long and hard on whether I even wanted to know how much I spent on this restoration. I've got all the receipts, give or take. Well, here goes....

Most of the stainless hardware came from Bolt Depot mixed in with other orders. I'm not gonna try and separate it all. Ballpark.... I'll say $100
Total= $2230.37
There's probably a few odds and ends missing, but that should be pretty close.
For a bike that looks (in my opinion) better than it did the day it sat on the showroom floor... that ain't bad. :smoke:

Thanks Bob. To be fair, I already had a lot of stuff I didn't put a price on 'cause I don't remember what it cost. The epoxy primer was free, black for the frame was leftovers from another job... shocks were like ten bucks from a guy on Ebay about ten yrs ago.... lots of little stuff like that makes a difference.

Let me know what I should be buying to add the extra disc if you do not mind.
Maybe we can get @gggGary to chime in here... as I'm no expert. Obviously an extra disc, extra brake line and splitter block. The opposite caliper can be had from Mikes. It's kinda spendy though. Still trying to source a cheaper one.... Anybody?

C’mon you guys I find used brake stuff pretty easy . XS , SR500 .
Ebay, tho I got burned on a warped disc that way .
Any Scrap yards still around where you are ?

For the 77 up forks the LH caliper from a STANDARD version of the XS750, XS850 works. Maybe the XS1100 also the Special versions used a different fork and caliper. Actually a complete fork transplant from an XS750 (rotors needed too) works, you need to swap in the longer XS650 stem.

Just a note if you happen to acquire an SR500 left caliper and mount, or any other that used a 5mm thick disc - you'll need to change out the little stainless caliper shims, or "retainers" as Yamaha calls them .....

Then you'll probably want page 1 too, lol .....

I tried these things on my '78 when the aftermarket pads started squealing shortly after I installed them. They didn't help. What did cure it was installing the larger shims that go behind the pads and came on some of the later models.

Partzilla......lol

if you look up 77D the caliper is a different part #..........But they add the other models with the 3H5-25810-12-00 # but don't add the 77D as a vise versa

Appreciate the offer but I've got the discs. I'm needing the left caliper and caliper mount bracket.
Curious Jim as to which thickness discs you have ? 5mm or 7mm.
I’ve been describing for months that there is a physical difference in the hanger castings. Today 5twins confirmed this too with the diagram of the “retainers” which vary in the gap width. *Type I and Type II which are not interchangeable. (distance A)
I now believe it to be best to use a hanger and retainer which is designed for use with the appropriate width disc. Yes an SR500 hanger type II retainer may snap in place in an XS hanger which is type I but it overlaps slightly inside edges.
I encourage an SR left hanger and a XS400 rt hanger attempts with 5mm thick discs .

I run a single SR500 disc on my '78 in place of the original 7mm disc. I didn't change the caliper, it's hanger bracket, or those little retainers in the hanger to 5mm disc ones. But truth be told, I didn't even know about those different retainers at the time. I'll have to do some comparing of parts but I don't think the calipers and hanger brackets differ, just those little retainer clips.
