Hey guys, I haven't been on much lately and kinda missed everybody but between work, the weather and everything else going on the Wife decided it was her turn for a place to hang and relax. She's been after me for sometime to build her a She-shed and with everything she does for me and allows me to indulge my whims and man projects I figured it was her turn. She has been wanting a screened room out back forever since it's wooded behind our house and gets pretty "buggy" at times I figured why not. The neighbors have screened rooms off their decks so I had kind of an idea what to do but they are total homeowner builds and I didn't want to copy what they had. I originally planned on expanding my deck but after looking at what I would have to do I decided to use the available space that was really just a place for a large outdoor table that we rarely used.(mosquitoes). I did the lay out in an area appx 12'x11' that would use the existing steps and was also over some support posts that were large enough to bear the weight of what I wanted to do. I started out with a basic frame design and used all pressure treated lumber for my wall studs and plates.

It was going to be all windows with a door off the deck and one going down my large set of steps. I also have steps on the two fron corners so I didn't think I would miss them if the room blocked them off. Next was the rafters.

I used a 2x6 header all the way around the top of the walls to support the roof load but after framing the roof I realized there wasn't much wall supporting anything so I had to put on my thinking hat to shore the structure up. I ended up using a 2x8 on the flat inside at the top of the wall and it took the rack factor out but I still had plenty of sway so that had to be dealt with. I knew once I sheeted the bottom that would take out some of it but I needed to reinforce the double 2x4 kings before I felt comfortable putting the roof weight on.

I solved that issue by using 1x material to wrap all the studs, effectively turning them into beam posts

Once I was happy that the thing wasn't going to fall over and everything felt nice and sturdy I put the roof on.

I decided to leave the rafters open so I took the cut-offs from the rafters and used them to brace the roof so it wouldn't sag and splay the walls.

Things started progressing very nicely after that and I was able to get creative. I made stops for all the openings and began installing my screens.

I liked the gable ends open so I made pieces for that and screened them as well. I wasn't sure what to use as a siding but the wife made a suggestion that I decided to go with,

Looks pretty nice from the inside as well.

I liked the lattice so much I decided to use it all the way around.

Some of my pics may be a little out of sequence but you can get the idea.

After working on this for a couple of weeks after work I was really ready to finish but one thing I've learned, especially working on my bikes is that no matter how bad you want to finish, shortcuts will put you in the ditch...So I toughed it out and after three weeks of spare time I had the thing done.

I then realized my deck looked like crap so a good powerwash and two gallons of stain I had that done as well.

Unfortunately the wife had other ideas as to how the inside should look so off we went for a Craigslist purchase.

I have to admit she was right and I'm really happy how things turned out.
