Jim's 1980 SG Miss September

.326 pin in the “A” gap on a SR hanger and .406 pin in the gap on a XS hanger.
These are left side hangers.
Finding a narrow right side hanger is the challenge.
I cannot say for certain what I have found on for right , but it also has the .326 wide gap. Solid casting however.
XJ650RJ I was told.

Bottom pic is the unknown right side hanger.

So.... the front brake leaves a little to be desired. I think that in a panic stop, all it'll do is slow my eventual arrival at the accident site... :er:
It's firm... hydraulically it's just fine... and I know that XS fronts ain't exactly world class stoppers, but this one is really weak. I used the pads the PO had installed just before I bought it... and he installed 'em thinkin' that was why the front brake didn't work... yeah.. don't quit your day job there buddy. I've got about 400 miles on 'er now, with tons of extra braking, so I think they're about as bedded in as they're gonna get. So... who do you guys like for pads on these bikes? I've definitely decided to go with the dual disc, so I need recommendations before I spring for 2 sets.... Anyone?

Also... cheapest left caliper and mount I've found is just over a hundred bucks from TC Bros. Anyone out there got a cheaper option? Anyone holding?

Moving along.... I ordered this fork bag from Amazon. You ever use one? Thoughts?

.... and Ebay has these bags for like... super cheap. I think the brown would go with the candy red nicely. Can't decide (if I order 'em) if I want the brown bottoms or the black?
Yeah... I'm just full of questions today. Anyone?

K... Yes opinions on pads and Yes, holding left side stuff . :lmao:
Are your Front pads by any chance EBC sintered ?
I think the stock Sumitomo pads are definitely better !
My extra left side is stock XS stuff.
PM me. This eve I can provide left side stuff pics.
So , Caliper piston needed ? Anybody have one of those for Jim ?

I just checked Randy and these are the Sumitomo pads. They were soaked in brake fluid when I got the bike, so maybe they're just trashed. I have 3 or 4 calipers layin' around, so I'll check and see if there's a good piston in one of 'em.

I went through all the extra calipers I have recently. I wish I would have done so over the years as I acquired them because pretty much all the pistons were shot now from sitting all that time full of bad (waterlogged) brake fluid. The pads were hit and miss. Some I could tell were good from just looking at them. Others were oil soaked. I bead blast them and that shows me if they are still good. Oil soaked ones are dark colored of course, but the blasting turns them a nice light brown again. If they're good, they'll stay that way. If not, within an hour or two, more oil will ooze out of them and turn them dark again. You could try blasting yours and see if they stay light brown or turn dark again.

I quite like stock pads. I put aftermarket pads on my '78, Ferodo Platinums from 650Central I think, and wasn't real impressed with them at first. But now they seem to work pretty good. They have about 5K miles on them and maybe they just require a longer bed-in period than others, or maybe the 11mm MC I swapped on is helping. I still have stock pads on my '83 but it doesn't seem to brake quite as well as I remember my '78 doing while it still had stock pads. At this very moment, I'm in the midst of swapping a 1/2" MC onto it so we'll see what that does.

Stock Brake pads I’ve had some luck cleaning by letting them sit pad down in shallow Isopropanol. Then wiping aggressively on very absorbent shop towels. Repeat a few times. After, If you heat them in the oven you can see if any remaining brake fluid still wettens the surface.. wettens lol. Is that a word lol:D

Don't remember what I soaked these in... acetone maybe? New motor for my compressor is supposed to be here tomorrow. I'll give the bead blasting a shot and see what happens.

Hey Jim,
I couldn’t remember , so I just went and looked. I am running EBC organic pads on my ‘77. That bike stops great!
I can stop hard with just one finger, but having said that, the entire front brake system is new, including a steel braid brake line. The only original part is the rotor. I got mine from this eBay seller,

That brown leather tool bag is sharp! I love the vintage look of it, I also really like the brown saddle bags, it’s different from what you see on everybody else’s bikes. Careful though, you’ll have to complete the look with a brown bomber jacket for yourself!

Never ever got a fork oil soaked pad to work good again.... Not from lack of trying.
Allisons period piece front brake sucks, gotta look into that one. think it's all rebuilt stock parts and ?? replacement pads.

I like both the tool bag and the saddlebags - and yup, the price IS right!

I’d be tempted to go black with the brown trim rather than the other way around. Too much brown is a bit too....hipsterish for my taste plus it will show road grime much more quickly.

I like the fork bags. I have one on my CB750 Custom and one for the bobber that I'm building. I don't use the Honda's bag for storage really, it takes the place of that ugly chrome, plastic badge that will not retain it's paint. Might be some tools in there, I can't remember. The hardtails tool bag will house my wire nest, I'm breaking all of the unwritten bobber rules. And, gotta have a place to put some fringe.

Scott

Oh, forget the vinyl or leather straps/fasteners that come with the bags, use zip-ties.

Brake pads? I like the Vesrah semi-metallic ones on both ends of my '78. And a fork bag from Nelson-Rigg below the headlight in black cordura....
