Any thoughts on the mufflers?

If you do a forum search for Dunstall mufflers , you’ll get a lot of hits. There are a lot of posts regarding sound and fitment. Good luck!

I put on a set of upswept shorties on my 77D.
At first I threw together a test bike for mods before I swapped out motors. Here is the 1981 motor after installing the mufflers on the stock headers. Also, just installed a pamco ignition on this motor. Mufflers are freshly packed. Which will last a while. I have some years on them and have yet to repack them... they need it. The one thing about short mufflers is you loose low end torque. (alright with me)

Putting on some othe muffler means you have to rig a stopper for your center stand, or it will wack the pipes everytime you come off it.
I did not re-jet my carbs. Bike runs well for me.

Some few years later, I swapped out the motors and pipes.

Check Amazon instead of Mike's...see my avatar for them on my '77. Like the sound and looks.

There are 2 versions of those Dunstall replica mufflers out there. The ones you linked to with the removable fiberglass wrapped baffles are the better ones. The other ones have a fixed steel baffle and aren't so good. I started out with those other ones. One of the baffles broke loose and blew out within the first few hundred miles. I thought they sounded OK until I got a set of the original Commandos MikesXS used to sell. I mounted just one with one Dunstall and started the bike. That showed me just how awful sounding the Dunstall really was, lol.

Personally, I'm not a fan of any of these aftermarket mufflers that require reducer sleeves to fit up to your headpipes. They never seal up right. I try to find mufflers with a 1.5" inlet that matches the headpipe. I think I may try a set of these next .....

They are commando style I got from Amazon for $60 each and, wait for it, $2.68 shipping. Headpipes are XS Performance that came with the bike.

YUP.......unbelievable! :D That's one of the reasons I bought from Amazon. They were listed for Triumphs and BSAs and stated that they were the last ones available though, but had the same part #.:yikes:

I’m gonna be running a stock setup on my XS2. I’ve read the mufflers tend to swell in the back. Anything I need to know? Any feedback is always helpful. Thanks.
