What have you done to your XS today?

So, this morning I replaced my brushes. One of the two that I took off the bike was worn down to the line. After buttoning everything back up, I started her up and took her for a short test ride. Funniest thing- no more flickering dash lights! Too good to be true! I think that what was happening was since the one brush was so short, there wasn’t enough tension on the spring to make good contact to the rotor. It was making SOME contact, so it was charging a bit, but at higher RPM’s the vibrations probably kept it from making enough, so it died over time. I thought it was funny that the new battery lasted 500 miles before dying. That would also explain why the new battery died when I went to pick up my daughter from camp; I rode about 90 the entire 50 minute ride on the interstate. I bet going that fast for so long meant the rotor was spinning too fast for the spent brush to make enough contact to charge and it drained the battery on that ride.
Anyway, We ran errands all day while she sat and looked pretty. I just got back from an hour long evening/night ride. The speedo magically started working perfectly, and the tach sorted itself Out and is perfectly responsive again. To top it off, my brake lever has had some extra play in it ever since I rebuilt it, because after warming up it would get a little tighter. I think I had an air bubble in it that needed bled out. Earlier today, the lever had too much slack, so I tightened it up a bit. It didn't get any tighter On the ride, so I think the Air bubble must have finally found its way to the MC. All the issues on the bike seem to have been sorted out, and I can only take credit for one of them! She’s back at 100% and looking/riding better than ever!

Fitted a 520 DID “o” ring chain with 17T front sprocket to go with the 34 on the rear.

On torquing the front sprocket book says 47 foot pounds but some on this forum have mentioned 80? I have gone to 70 and see what happens, noticed on an earlier model it was 36? It’s an SG if anyone can put my mind at ease

Might have to put the linky on the inside too, now I seen the pic it looks ugly

Yamaha book for the SG is 47ft. lbs. Most people just crank it down 'till it squeals in protest. ;)
Re: the master... I consider it a regular "check item." I like it on the outside where it's easy to see. If you want a little added security and some "techno bling"... do this....

View attachment 146835 So, this morning I replaced my brushes

TZ i replaced my brushes a few weeks ago with oem ones I got on ebay and has been running better since. I had Mikes on there and seems voltage showing on my voltmeter was way more all over the 14’s but now pretty much is steady at 14.2. Just wondering if you put oem ones in. JC

F&C - I’m sure that photo below was taken before you completed your work for the day but I must point out that you haven’t installed a cotter pin on your rear axle castellated nut.

YIKES!! :yikes:

...also, and I hope you’ll forgive me, but I recommend against moving the master linky to the inside.

The safety of you and your bike depend on that little item and so you want it to be clearly visible whenever you stop to look at it.

I went down to the office this AM to do some work :wtf: and then I went out with a buddy to buzz around in his (check this out....) 1960 Mercedes 300SL roadster

<holy cow are those cool cars>.....

.....so, I didn’t do anything on my bikes today, except plug in the battery maintainer.

Lol Pete, I am a long way from the end of this project. Maybe at the end of summer I can have the bike just the way I want it. Then it’s tear down time to start the painting and finessing. Hope to have all done by next spring. This XS650 stuff is addictive though, I can see why people don’t just stop at one bike. Keep pointing stuff out though if you see something because for sure I will make mistakes.....!

Spent 10 minutes doing a trial tighten up and the discs run centred and true. Now I am wondering if I should return the new 16 mm master I bought in favour of an 11 or 14. Will be using the search button again.

Ooooohhhhh....pretty!

I removed, cleaned and reinstalled the carbs, set the timing and 2Gals fresh fuel all in the newly climate controlled garage. The 'King didn't see anything and the Queen was very happy, we went for a short ride and then I remembered, Oh Crap, expired number plates! Got home without a citation. She's running pretty good again.

I bought a set of “Rick’s motorsports” brand brushes. They seem to be doing alright.

Cool!
IMHO don't got to 11mm, 14 should be good. what's squeezing madness in my Avatar.
