What have you done to your XS today?

Keep this in your memory file guys. It is critical you keep the lever tight on the shaft, if it won't tighten, do what fishnchips shows and widen the slot! Hint; a mini cutoff wheel in a dremel is perfect for this job.

Hii Gary,
if, like on my Heritage Special, the splines were vibration-worn enough that the shift lever was still loose after the slot widening,
what worked for me was to drill a 1/8" hole along the spline, (half in the lever, half in the shaft) and drive a 1/8" roll-pin in there.
That was a temporary measure to keep the bike running until I installed the new shifter shaft. It's lasted 3 years so far.

It was quite worn Fred, I guess that’s why I had to make a slot. I only just managed to tighten it but the bolt was quite stressed. Good suggestion, Looks like there’s a bit of room to drill and tap a larger also thread if needs be.

Starts on the button and I drove it around the back yard. Clutch need adjustment majorly, have to get a shorter spring for rear brake switch, need to put on grips, maybe reroute fuel lines, but quite pleased.

That really is quite eye catching! I love the way you’ve carried the black and silver theme through the whole bike.
That black motor / black header combo looks good, the small Lucas tail light, the dual slotted front discs! There are just nice details everywhere you look, and at world class speed to boot!
When you’re all done, you should posting a before photo , of what you started with.

Mailman: MaxPete and I picked up this bike this spring in Toronto as a bare frame and boxes of parts (motor was unopened and said to be good - it is) along with a 78 Standard which was a pretty complete but neglected roller and the rust bucket 78 Special frame which is the subject of another thread (one step from the bin).

As far as VYR, Gary, too early to tell.

After my last post I went back and re read all of your posts leading up to today. I forgot it was a bitsa.
You need to start your own build threads Lakeview, you are fun to follow! :)

What are the front rotors from? XS750?

I'm turning my 80 xs650 special into a road race bike through AHRMA in however many years it takes lol. But today I took the top of the steering column off so I could just simply remove the headlamp mounts. I put it back together and now the steering column wants to lock into center place? when I turn left or right you can feel it catch, almost like a super strong magnet.

One More Traffic Light
And I could have got all the way home. Leaving town and up to 3rd when the clutch cable said good bye. I knew I had one more light to get through before I was in the country so proceeded merrily along. About 100 yards away and it goes red, wheel into Tim's hoping to ride around the lot and get back out on road without stopping, but no luck.
Just boring work after that - get home, get truck, empty trailer, hook up, go get it, done.
It's an easier ramp on the trailer so used it rather than the van.
All good now.

Wow!! Just Stunning! I love the exhaust too..Is that painted or powder coated?..Its really glossy...Those rotors look like they are off an XS1100..hard to say...It would be awesome to see this at the VYR..as it is this year's VYR is going to be off the charts..Epic... Mega Grande...!!!!
