Seeing as many of us are getting on a bit and have various health and weight issues I thought it might be useful to start a dedicated thread to keep us abreast of current developments in our understanding of Nutrition and how it effects our general Health.

I also thought it could be somewhere we could record our progress with any weight loss program we may be on and perhaps receive some advice, tips and support .;)

All nutritional advice given should include a link to the scientific or medical published source please as there is already enough quackery and bullshit on the net to sink a carrier.

Todays factoid........
There are no essential Vitamins or Minerals contained in Carbohydrates (plant based foods).
There is no Nutritional benefit from fibre in our diets .

I have added Max's inspiration story of his Keto jouney and astounding weight loss below

In Jan 2018..my Dr informed me that my blood sugar #s were too high and that I was pre stage T2 Diabetic..My beginningng weight was 205 lbs on my 5'9" frame.
She put me on Metformin..after just 1 week...I threw the remainder down the toilet. It made me so sick I couldnt eat anything plus a host of other symptoms...I was determined to do this myself without drugs. It took me until March of 2018 before I learned of the Ketogenic diet..Prior to this I had been just cutting back portion size and limiting my fast food habits..but still consuming lots of carbohydrates.
March 2018 saw me begin in earnest on the Ketogenic diet..

My 1st order of business was to clean out my cupboard and pantry..I either threw stuff away or I gave it to my brother.. Then I started reading labels on foods...20 g limitation daily..cut out all sugars...so it has been 19 months from 205# to my current weight @140#. It took me a good 2 weeks to get my carbs down to the20g level and enter ketosis initially...
The 1st real month in Ketosis saw me lose 20 lbs..right out the gate..I was amazed...i couldnt believe it..never have I succeeded in dieting before..I watched as ketosis just literally burned the pounds off of me..Every pound off only motivated me further.

So it has been 19 months since I began this journey but in essence i had already reached my goal weight of 155lbs in about 12 months...the past 7 months my loss has slowed down because i have added some carbs back into my diet...but I continue to shed the pounds.
I am just 12 lbs away from what I weighed in college over 40 yrs ago @ 128# and a lean mean running machine that I was at that time..

I feel great..my energy levels are normal where as before they weren't. I was sleeping alot during the day..that too has abated...
Before..I couldnt stand for more than 2 mins my low back would become heavier the longer i tried to stand...That is gone too.. Now I can stand for hours with only mild soreness in my lower back.

This is really easy to do..i know because I have done it..If I can do it anyone can...meaning YOU!!!
..It is my pleasure to share this with you all... Good luck and a little determination and you will succeed...That is my sincere wish for all that care to improve upon their health and well being...
Footnote..I have accomplished this with MINIMAL EXERCISE since i have alot of arthritis ..any extreme exercise does more harm than good IMO..

To start the ball rolling I have just started a weight loss program 2 weeks ago in an attempt to reduce my blood glucose levels and lose some weight.(Type 2 Diabetic)

My starting weight was 246 lbs and in 2 weeks I have lost 15 lbs by following a high Fat high protein diet with as little Carbohydrate as possible . I have eaten very well and not been hungry at all and interestingly I no longer have any craving for cake biscuits bread potatoes pasta and other carbs I used to crave continuously.

Already in just 2x weeks I have noticed some significant improvements in my mental and physical health .I am less fatigued and feel mentally sharper . My concentration is much improved and I no longer need to go to the bathroom 3-4 times a night so I'm sleeping better too. The arthritic aches that I used to suffer in my wrists, thumbs and ankles have virtually disappeared too. The other very noticeable improvement has been with my sight which is less blurred than it was and I no longer have that periodic burning sensation in my eyes that I used to have .

It took me 11 months to go from 205# to 150#..Slowly reducing the weight and it is staying off...I am satisfied that i have reached my goal weight ..However it isnt staying there..as long as i maintain the Keto diet I am still losing weight..This a.m. I weighed in @ 148#..
For my height (5'9") ideally my weight range is 145#-155# so I am right where i should be. Overall i feel great however my Arthralgia has not improved..if anything it has worsened...I takes me 2 hours every a.m. before my pain meds kick in. Hate being dependant on drugs but there isnt much choice . Every 3 months or so I need Cortisone injections in my neck and shoulders...and sometimes my hands...those needles are small.
I also need shots in my low back but that is an in Hosp. procedeure with really big needles. I hate needles so my pain meds work well enough for the low back problems.....no plans for big needles...
Keep at it..the more you lose the more motivating it becomes...Beware of losing it too quickly though..IMO the slower it comes off the longer it will stay off...

well done max sounds like you have done all the right things and you know how to keep the weight off .keeping to a high Fat and Protein and low Carb diet as a lifestyle.

If you wish not to lose any more weight you'll need to look at what you are currently eating and change some of the fats you are eating for some that have a higher calorific value and nutritional density and possibly consider reintroducing some carbs like the occasional baked potato or some brown rice.

You have to watch out for quackery advice though. I just googled 'fats with high nutritional value' and got the advice ...baked beans ! ........no wonder we have a World crisis with Diabetes and cardiovascular disease
Don't stress too much about gaining or losing 2-3 pounds a day ,as a single pee of 1 pint can weigh 1 lb and you can probably lose that much simply as sweat in hot weather.

today I have lost a further 3 lbs and it has occured to me that I did not mention the most significant improvement I have noticed in the past week or so.

I have now been completely free of constipation for the past 8 days. ! ..........
For the past 30+ years I have suffered with chronic constipation as do many others on a high carb diet. For the past 3 years I have been treating it with a daily laxative called Laxido. Constipation is a very common condition that can be very debilitating and the build up of toxins in the gut has a very negative effect on health , IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), hemorrhoids, anal fissures, perianal abscesses, anal fistulas, perianal infections, diverticular diseases, colitis, colon polyps and cancer to name a few. Wish I'd know about the benefits of a low carb diet years ago

well done 2M thats a milestone achievement.

I have a long way to go yet ...another 26 lbs to be precise ...groan..

peanut; what exercise are you doing?
My goto when the stomach expands is to start a project requiring a bunch of exertion. Can't stand "excercise" per say but like toomany landscape type work is a great way to shrink a belly.

Hi peanut,

When I was 40 I was 20 stone (280 pounds) and on verge diabetic. Took up running and lowered my fat intake and got down to 13 stone 10 was my lowest weight (193 pounds).

Took me about 18 months but the running is what really helped.

Back up to 16 stone now a few years later but would like to get back to my fighting weight 14 stone 7.

Might just have a crack at it now since there competition :geek:

Good luck with your weight loss. I reckon it’s better to hit the latter years in as good a condition as you can. No fun been old and overweight.

not very much to be truthful. Exercise has been proven to be an extremely ineffective way to lose weight .;)

in fact the more you exercise the more likely you are to put on extra muscle which is heavier than fat.
Not only that but the extra exercise uses up valuable energy which makes you more hungry to replace it .

I find the most effective exercise is high intensity for short periods .......so most days I walk flat out, as fast as I can, up steep hills for 15-20 minutes and also do some low rep heavy weights infrequently .

The most effective way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat more protein and fat and cut out as much carbohydrate as possible.

For 30 years we have been advised by our Governments and health experts to eat more carbohydrates and less fat . The result of that is that we now have a Worldwide epidemic of type 2 Diabetes and coronary heart disease, Athrosclerosis Arthritus and numerous other debilitating chronic illnesses.

FWIW I lost all my weight with minimal exercise..ketosis metabolizes you...Burning fat regardless of physical exertion....I used to be a runner...for the 1st 30 yrs of my life i would run 3 to 10 miles daily...but once i had back surgeries..then my running was done....
But i have regained my runner's physique as a result of the Keto diet....

F& P its really good to see you join Garry ...but please buddy ..do a bit of reading about current food guidelines and weightloss

whatever you do ..........do not cut down on your Fat ! ........ eat more fat and cut carbohydrates
if you want to lose weight then eat more fat and more protein but cut down on what makes us put on weight ....Carbohydrates.

It is not fat that makes us over weight and fat ,nor is it protein this is an indisputable proven fact and I challenge anyone to show me a single bit of research that proves otherwise
Watch this short video of one of the Worlds leading Nutritionists as she advises the Government at Westminster this year. It will completely change the way you think about what you eat forever.

I am not stopping eating chips peanut. Or bread. Or a chip butty ;)

I think the best way to loose weight is this. Small breakfast. Get your metabolism going. Don’t eat lunch until you have been hungry for at least an hour. Don’t eat dinner until you have been hungry for at least an hour. Go to bed slightly hungry but not starving, grab a banana if you can’t hold on.

Strange how you don’t wake up feeling hungry when you go to bed hungry?

I think cutting fat or cutting carbs is wrong personally. I recommend eating just a little less and excercising just a little more. Eat what you want but in moderation.

Walking up steep hills is excellent excercise.

well you gotta do what you gotta do Garry..............but being hungry all the time like that is surely no way for us to live happily and healthily.;)

if you follow a low carb high fat high protein diet you can practically eat as much as you want and never feel hungry.

I can eat bacon egg sausage & tomato for breakfast every day and still lose weight and keep the weight off !

Its no good losing weight like you and I both have ...........and then putting it all back on again ,...because we are unable to continually live constantly hungry .
We have both tried that already and we both know that it doesn't work in the long run. ;)

Hi peanut,

I don’t mind feeling hungry for an hour. It’s something you can get used to. I am not saying any one particular diet is the correct way to go because diets are always fashionable. Every year there’s new research and new diets.

There’s one thing we all agree on and that’s to loose weight and be healthy. Good on you for getting it off though.

Got to go now. I’m starving

:D

The benefits of exercise that involves cognitive thinking are literally life changing.
you'll have to explain that one to me Gary its gone completely over my head lol...:laugh2:

heres an interesting fact to ponder on.

take the Worlds top predator The Lion , King of beasts and pound for pound arguably the one of the strongest and most powerful mammals on the planet .
For 22+ hours every day they sleep to conserve energy :)
