Jim's 1980 SG Miss September

Nice, Jim! The difference between chrome and stainless? You polish chrome until it rusts. Then you replace it. Stainless, you just polish. "The Basketcase" will have as much stainless (Allen heads. Fewer/smaller tools to carry) as I can put on it.

Got the discs cleaned up today. There's a few small grooves left in 'em.... but they'll do.
I'm sittin here taping 'em up for paint and had a thought (uh oh...), anyone ever paint the centers silver instead of the factory black? Anyone?

With the discs drilled, the grooving may eventually polish itself out. Joe Minton mentioned this happening with drilled discs in his "Minton Mods" article.

Without wishing to touch off another diatribe on unsprung mass (and yes, I can do the math) it seems to me that silver, gold, or even white or some other “light” colour would make the front end of the bike appear less massive (i.e. lighter).

If the disk hubs were painted black, the whole thing would look “heavier” IMO.

I see where you're goin' Pete... agreed, the black does "look" heavier.... and I love the gold look Bob.... but..... I've got some silver left over from painting the engine cases. She still want's to be like "Madness" when she grows up.. but she did say no to the red swingarm.
So.... silver it is.

You're saying we can FOOL the handling into not noticing the unsprung mass? Kind of like physics op art?

Anticipation!
Hey, question here. That package of Stainless Steel bolts has “(A-2)” on the label ? Strange A-2 is a tool steel ?
Are they magnetic ?

Not tool steel... just a general purpose stainless. Also known as 18/8 or 304 stainless.

It’s prob not A-2 tool steel. That does actually rust.
Stainless series 300 say 304/316 is non magnetic. Stainless series 400 is magnetic.
18-8 IDK about ...

... wait for it....
Both rotors got 2 coats of POR15 engine paint, then 3 coats of 2 part urethane clear.
