I am talking about those cheap $90 shocks. I'm just curious if the eyes fit OK or do I need to make new bushings?

Unless there is a upper bushing option when you order the shocks you will need to replace the uppers. Most of the Chinky shocks come with a 10mm (lower) and a extra 12mm bushing in the kit. I think the XS650 has a 14mm upper mounting stud. Much easier to buy them than it is to make them.

They fit ok, the bushings are a little off. You really need to open them up, clean them, and refill with good fork oil. QA lets them out maybe 1/3 to 1/2 filled, which means they only have damping for part of their travel out of the box. And the "oil" in them is pretty nasty yellowish and smells.

Where do I buy the 14mm spacer?

Would the specs on these bushings / metal spacers fit well?

I came across these "built in spring" shocks for under $100 as well. How do you think these would look? They appear to be well made.

When it comes to suspension, you get what you pay for. Those cheap Chinese units are cheap for a reason. I would just make sure they are rebuildable. I recently got a very nice set of used stock Triumph Bonneville shocks for about $40 delivered. They are well made and provide much better dampening that the crappy units I bought from Mikes. All I’m saying is don’t expect too much for any new shock for under $100.
