I haven't been keeping up on your build Jim I got a few pages to read !!
It is looking over the top great
With 2027 posts, its dangerous to fall behind on this thread...;)

Especially for me. I'm a "slow reader...."
I missed the Evelyn Wood "speed reading" course.

I forgot where I left off LOL Shit it's too nice of a day here in MN I'll be back

Carbs Missing Under Load.
Tried everything I could think of without pulling the carbs... pulled and cleaned all the jets, tweaked the floats, played with sync... even swapped in the spare TCI box just in case... nothin' worked. Well crap... pulled the carbs and tore 'em apart. Didn't see anything obvious, so I pulled everything out of 'em and sprayed every orifice and passageway with WD40 and blew out with shop air.... multiple times.... a whole friggin can of WD and 2 hrs. worth of purging..... rinse and repeat 'till the can was empty. Put 'em back together and reinstalled 'em. I wasn't hopeful 'cause I didn't really see anything obvious... but now she runs the way she's supposed to. Rode around for about an hour out on the back roads and she's back to pullin' strong all the way to redline. WTF!?! I guess at this point, I don't really care long as it's fixed... but it sure would be nice to know what caused it.... :umm:

Back in the day, I used to sync carbs by ear and feel. I'm out of practice now so I broke down and made a manometer. Works a treat. :D

Wow, Jim...just...wow!!! All the tweaks... You know a lot of 'em are gonna find their way onto "The Basketcase". And the hardware?!! Who'd have ever thunk it? I gotta remember the bolt head trick (if it isn't an Allen head, as discussed). So much to remember! Thank God for mentors like you! I can only aspire to a level near the builds I've seen here...:bow2:

Looks and sounds good Jim - but it does surprise when well-sorted bikes like yours suddenly go out of tune.

Back in the 70’s, I rode an XS650 for several years and tens of thousands of miles and except for oil changes, timing chain & valve lash adjustment and a new set of plugs occasionally, I never really gave a thought to carb balancing at all. The darned thing just always worked like a charm.

Yeah.... it's damned odd Pete. Those carbs soaked in carb cleaner for 3 days during the resto if I remember correctly. I figured they'd be good for years.
... and yeah, back in the day, it was points, plugs, tires and chains.... top the oil from time to time and go forever. Never really worried about the rest, they just kept goin' and goin'...
Ahhh.... we'll get there.:D

@canuck1969 recently put some professionally shot pics of his resto in his build thread. That got me to thinking.... I know right.. pretty scary...
My wife Sue has been a professional photographer since being trained as one by the Air Force in 82. She retired from that field a few yrs ago... but she still has all her equipment. A little rummaging around in the basement.... and I found it. ;)
Tripods, backdrops, lights... all of it. So.... I turned the garage into a studio. I'm just a rank amateur, but... not too bad for my first try.

Hey Jim. Great photo. The other day when I left your house I noticed that the water in the fountains at N Oak Traffic Way and Vivion Road was "Red". Probably for a Chief`s game but that would have made a good outdoor background for a red bike??

Yeah... rode down there the other day with the intention of getting a pic of the SG with the red fountain in the background. Unfortunately parking is too far away from the fountain for a good shot.... and that intersection is too damn dangerous to stop at. I'm gonna see if I can't pull it off at the crack of dawn Sunday morning.

It never ends... does it....
Bikes been running great since I re-cleaned the carbs. Started out this morning for Clark Tools (my favorite store). About halfway there it started sputterin' and backfiring. So, after a little test riding... here's the symptoms: Idles good, accelerates good...'till about 2200 revs then it starts popin' and sputtering. About 3 grand it goes (quickly) back to running smooth. When it acts up, I can back off the throttle and reapply power and sometimes that works, sometime it just keeps acting up. Other than that, throttle position has no affect. It's fixed now.

Time for a little armchair troubleshooting..... what fixed it?

I was going to say a fuel blockage, like a plugged jet. But that wouldn’t fix itself, just by blipping the throttle.
Hmmm.....:umm:

And no....it never ends. o_O
