What great fortune that you and millions of others (not so much for the Bahamas :() were spared significant damage.

Gotta love the sissy bars !
I got the same sissy/rack on my '81 when I bought it as a barn find.

...and the chrome side panel is something I've never seen.

Hey look, high ratio primary gears. Gotta say thanks to Ivan Hoey for making these available, and bringing this set with him in his luggage to the US saving international shipping.

I still gotta peen the screws over so they can't come loose, but they are locktited.

That appears to be a KG brand rear rack, well made, and good chrome on them. I have one too as well as their bolt- on trunk box for when Mrs. Jax rides and it has a backrest pad for her too. That big trunk box is pretty handy for 2 up day rides so incidental purchases can be just pitched in! We rode around in the western North Carolina Smoky Mountains area a few years back with it on and it made a large difference in her comfort level, while totally compromising the sporty look of the "tracker" theme! Oh the things we do for them that they have no idea of..........

Well, let's all hope that this big storm doesn't cause any more harm to people or their property as it passes into history.

I am not doing anything to my XS650 today...but yesterday was a big day for Lucille and I...

We went to Wheels on Wyandotte which is a big car and bike show here in Windsor. It isn't very formal but it is fun! Our local chapter of the Can. Vintage M/C Group (www.cvmg.ca) had about 25-30 bikes of all types and vintages out and we just walked up and down the line checking out the nice hardware (some photos are below).

The little 1954 James 250 <I think> attracted a lot of attention as it is a cute as a bug's ear and runs like a ring-ding should. The other kind of fun thing that happened was that the Windsor Police were raffling off a couple of bicycles in support of a summer sports camp for underprivileged kids that they help to finance and so I bought a ticket and by golly, I won (this photo was shot at a post-show BBQ at CVMG member Kevin's home)...

Anyhow, the reason that I am not doing anything with my XS650 today is that I am preparing for a bike trip out to Winnipeg - departing early tomorrow morning. I have a business meeting there on Thursday-Friday of this week and I am making this into a short bike trip before the crummy weather gets going later in the fall. I will be riding the Honda ST1300 and I have a bit of prep work to do on her plus packing before I go.
My route (see map below) is about 1740 km and will take me straight north in Michigan to the Upper Peninsula (say 'Ya' to da UP eh?) and then west on US-2 through Duluth MN and onwards NW to the 'Peg. I will try to get past Duluth and stop in a smaller place west of the big city on Monday evening.

Any suggestions on a decent motel stop either east or west of Duluth - anyone?

Tomorrow's weather looks good but I'm pretty sure I am going to get wet on Tuesday - no matter where I am. I have built an extra day into my schedule (I have to be in Winnipeg on the evening of Wednesday Sept. 11) just in case the weather gets too nutty. If I have extra time, I will likely ride into North Dakota and see some sights (suggestions are welcome....)

On the return route: my meeting ends at noon or so on Friday and I will take off chop-chop to escape what looks like a lot of rain in Winnipeg that day. I plan to swing down into Wisconsin and I hope to stop-in and see the Baron of Baraboo and the Shed of Ill-Repute on Saturday.

Anyhow - it should be a fun ride and I've got my Frogg-Toggs set to go but I live in hope that they won't be needed.

Pete

Good Bones '78 Starts and Runs!
Put on a fresh set of carbs this morning and it started without too much fuss, starter is quiet, motor has no rap or tap, no blue smoke and no drips. Battery charging at 13.6 at fast idle so with all these positives, I will go ahead and put some "flesh" on it.
It will be stock and the next owner can get creative with it.
Now the grass needs some attention.
