Why No Mention of Sump Filter in Owner's Manual?

Okay, so I just read through 200 of the 420 threads on Sump filters trying to see if anyone addressed this question and don't see a discussion on it. "Why doesn't the owner's manual for my '81 SH mention anything about the sump filter needing to be checked/replaced periodically?" All it addresses is the regular oil drain plugs and filter. If the sump filter should be checked/cleaned/replaced periodically I would think it would be included in the maintenance schedule in the manual.

If it weren't for this forum I wouldn't even know there was a sump filter.

I think it's not mentioned because Yamaha considered it a dealer-serviced item. It's mentioned in the copy of the '72 owner's manual I have and that's how they describe it - "..... should be removed and cleaned by your dealer .....".

With replaced sump filter, wouldn't that be "parts and labor"? More $$ for the stealer, err dealership.

Naaaah. Just pad the bill as "labor". You wouldn't want anybody to know that a design flaw(?) results in 99 and 44/100ths% of filters tearing in virtually the same place, right? :wtf: We know better. So we patch with metal, and J-B Weld, and hope it holds. I saw a sump filter from Heiden tuning that looks promising...

I have the filter from Heiden Tuning and seems great so far.

Not sure on 'bees knees' but I was thinking the same giving my old girl some better protection. Crazy no filter modifications we done on a 50 year old problem never fixed by the factory or even mentioned. Not even after market filters have the patch on them.

Just my take on the Heiden ones and other similar ones. Filter from Fleabay, SS replacement for a few different KTM models.
If it works out would like to able to offer them up as an alternative for folks.
I might be interested
