It was actually in the crank case. When I pulled the drain plug, it was sitting on the magnet. This has me baffled. There I a guy on one of the Facebook xs 650 groups that ironically found the same exact thing, but no one has come up with a good solution. I’ve never torn one of these motors down, but I’m thinking I’ll have too most likely. I have looked through the technical drawings but haven’t seen anything that it matches up to for internal components

Looks like part of a side stand spring
...or maybe part of a clutch spring. As long as the oil is out, pop the right side cover and have a look-see. If there's nothing else noticeably wrong with the rest of the motor (kick, or e-start, etc.), half a coil off a clutch spring might've escaped your attention... :twocents:

I checked all the clutch springs and they’re intact. I also checked the valve springs as well and they were fine too. which after I thought about it, a valve spring would be Impossible to find in the crankcase because there is no feasible way for it to make it from the top of the head, through the piston and into the case. At least that’s my logic, but I’m no expert by any means.

Do you guys think it’s probable for a broken cushion spring to transfer from the clutch side of the case into the crankcase? I’m going to pull the clutch basket off tomorrow and see if anything’s broken and I totally agree it does look like one.

I'll be interested in what you find when you pull the clutch basket.
Cush spring, perhaps, as Jim intelligently surmised.

But if not, and before you tear down the engine, keep in mind that debris can get into an engine from more than one source (internally).

Consider the experience I had with my '80 XS, "Jimi" as I call it.

I pulled the sump filter for the first time in 2017 and found this:

I discovered that 2 of the washers under the filter hold-down bolts were not OEM washers.
That which I surmised was that a PO had pulled the filter, and after cleaning it, set it down in his parts tray with the other parts, then later discovered that 2 of his OEM washers had magically disappeared. But he didn't think to check the magnets on the filter, and installed it with them hanging there.
