I finally got smart and sprayed starter fluid around intake and carb. It revved up a bit. I didn't tighten bolts up tight enough apparently. I didn't put any gasket sealer on gasket when I installed carbs. Should I do that. It didn't appear to have any on them previously. What do you guys do??? Do you put sealer on gasket between carb and intake on engine??

I use a small bead of sealer between the gasket and manifold, none on the engine side. I do this not so much for sealing purposes but rather so that the gasket comes off with the manifold any time I remove it. I don't want it stuck to the engine. If you are using stock or stock-like gaskets, they really don't require any sealer because they are quite thick. Many of the aftermarket gaskets that come with new aftermarket manifolds are just thin paper. I won't use those.

I've used it to plug oil passageways.... yes. I've also used blue thread locker (Loctite) with good results.
Great thx. I think I’ll get a bottle of the sealer. Will be used on other spots on the motor. If used on thin paper gaskets (coated both sides), how difficult is disassembly? The beetle has lots of paper like gaskets and I don’t trust installing them dry.

I had done Hylomar but it was beyond its best before date. Hard to find that stuff up here. Or when you find it you need to take a mortgage out on the house.
there's old and new hylomar but it lasts forever for me, my first tube lasted and worked for 10 years, tube #2 is at least 5 years old, used some this week same as when new.

I’ll have to dig to see if I kept it. I originally bought it about 15 years ago when I planned to start the reassembly of my beetle engine. Sat for that long. Then somebody told me not to use it as it had a shelf life. Silly me believed him and I might have thrown it out.

One of my winter projects is the reassembly of my vw beetle engine. It has through the case 10mm studs. The 17mm nuts that hold the case together do not have washers under them. They bear up against the side of the crankcase when tightened. I inquired (with a VW group) whether there was sealant to be applied under the nuts to prevent oil seeping out from the crankcase and most said not necessary. I would however like to put something on the threads (most likely blue Loctite) and something under the nuts for insurance. What would be your recommendation for a sealant?
1. Nothing
2. Blue Loctite
3. Permatex aviation sealer
4. Yamabond or equivalent
5. Hylomar blue
6. Copper sealing washer (no inventory here at this time)
I now have all of the above sealants available so just need to decide which one.
Thx

OP, gaskets and sealants aren't the only things to be concerned about. Overtightening the carb boot fasteners by previous owners can cause a lot of grief. It's not unusual to find the edges of the screw holes extruded, so be sure the flanges on the head are flat. Paint the flange with a felt tip marker or machinist's dye if you have it. Cement a bit of 320 or 400 grit paper to a piece of glass and use that to check for high spots and knock them down. Also check the flange on the carb boot. When fasteners are run down too tight the boots can deform so that only the points under the screws make full contact.
