What have you done to your XS today?

An observation on my XS2. My engine had developed more shake and vibration than normal, I was beginning to worry that it was the first sign of a larger problem. This pronounced shaking was really what prompted me to go through that whole tune up ritual the other day.

The short story is this, I had been doing some less than careful , idle stop screw adjustment while sitting at stop lights, in an effort to slow my idle down. That combined with my dual throttle cables being slightly out of adjustment, had my carburetors out of synch. These early carburetors, being non linked and having two separate throttle cables have turned out to be much easier to fall out of synchronization than the later model linked units.

After carefully setting things back up the other day. My bike has it’s good nature back, and it’s running much nicer.
It still has its natural vibes, but the disconcerting shake is gone.

“ Dude.....your bike is trying to walk away.”

Nah......it was just my carbs outa synch.

My usual technique for cleaning my windshields is this, if there are smashed dried bugs, I always pre soak with a really wet towel soaked in hot water. Give that a few minutes just draped over the windshield and it softens up those crunchy bugs. Then I use a micro fiber washcloth and a bucket of warm soapy water , several light passes with a really well soaked cloth, then dry with a t shirt.

After that I do a light application of Plexus. The windshield was already clean, all the Plexus does is provide a slick non stick surface, like 2M was describing.

Friday garage time got some XS650 thrown in. (Truck keeping me busy)
Lubriplate super lube grease was my selection for steering stem and swingarm pivots.
All cleaned and packed full today.
Fresh triple tree paint and hardware sorting. Fresh speedometer chrome bucket. New to me beautiful headlight ears test fit. Bearing tension set.
Swingarm tested for feel and free play and yes it’s good !
Forks and shocks all ready for installation.
Progress for sure. Note the cool bicycle handlebars I’m mocking the front end together with. Compact

2017 Speed Twin take offs. They feel very good.
Forks are freshly serviced. 7+oz each leg. They are actually of the 79F. The set was hijacked for this 78E because the leg lowers are So nice !
A Special front fender in fine shape was sourced locally. Just some very nice improvements over the previous 78E from years prior.

Hey tekk220, what does your sump filter look like?:umm:
I don’t know. When I went to open it up I noticed how crusty the outside of the gasket looked and I didn’t have a replacement. So I left it for now. Ordered a new filter and gasket and then I’ll pry it open lol. Pics to come tho lol

I popped over my XS2 resto over for the first time. Very pleased. Some slight cable and carb idle adjustments. But other than that it’s running and charging and no leaks as of yet. My buddy Fred came down to help me with tweaking the carbs for the first start up and front brake issue I’ve been having. He thinks it’s a master cylinder issue. It won’t build pressure. It builds some, but maybe not enough. It won’t blow my finger off the end of the line. The calipers seem full. Pistons aren’t moving. Pads loose and rattle. Calipers are new. MikesXS. I know.:banghead: Roland just rebuilt the M/C.. But all in all a great day.

You’re getting close now buddy! Won’t be long.
