And the barn is in!

It’s pretty solid. One guy did the whole install. The pad was pretty level so he didn’t have to adjust too much. Very happy with the quality. Now hopefully I can get some room in the garage to start 2.0 this weekend!!!!

The shed is bigger than the workshop by a lot! I had a real moment of truth though pulling the mower in. I thought for a minute it wasn’t going to fit. My wife was grinning ear to ear thinking it wasn’t gonna make it. Had about an inch of room on each side! LIKE A GLOVE I yelled to her.

Today I decided to take a break from all my projects inside the house and get started on my workshop. With the new storage building in place I was able to move my tractor, Harley, and all lawn/garden tools out of my workshop. It’s is such a disaster area it was hard to decide where to start. I have 5-6 totes with just xs stuff, then another 5-6 with Harley parts and misc shop tools and supplies. Then all my saws and carpentry tools...... I’m not complaining, it’s just a lot of stuff.
Originally I wanted to build a really nice workbench with my new bottom tool box built in and tall enough to store my mobile workbench underneath. I just don’t have time for that right now. So I put the casters on the bottom box and threw my top box on to get started on tool storage. I’m going to just use the mobile workbench for now. It’s 5’l x 2’d on nice casters.
Next I decided to take down cabinets. While they are not bad units, they were just thrown up there and just didn’t work for me. I put up a piece of pegboard leftover from the old house in their place. Then I started putting up some metal shelves, also from the old workshop. They are 5’l x 12” d and fit nicely by the garage door track. With all this storage freed up I managed to empty out about 6 totes of tools. It still looks a mess and I have a long ways to go, but it feels good getting started on it.

It’s been quite a while since I updated this thread. Today the COVID19 virus allowed me some time in the shop. It’s been quite cluttered and bothering for some time so I decided to do something about it. I decided to add a shallow workbench on the side wall. A good place to make a permanent home for my drill press and grinder. The main beach is 5 1/2’ long and 18”deep. I Also added a lowered section on the end for the drill press and grinder stand. Then I cut down the wire bakers rack shelf and slid it underneath. The part I cutoff I flipped upside dow and am using it for an upper shelf and possibly somewhere to add a shop light. It’s not done but really just needs some plywood top added. The piece on there now was just a scrap I had but it’s too short and narrow. Pretty happy with it. I plan on getting rid of the flimsy metal shelves on the end and adding more permanent wood cubbies at a later date. Also would be nice for another section of pegboard up there too. My biggest goal is some sort of better organization. Tired of tripping over everything and digging for the tools I need.

I also added a big shelf the full width of the shop over the service door. I still need to add some supports before I can use it but it will make for a great storage area once done. I’ll grab some more lumber next week and make good use of all this social distancing thing!

Yes, you can never have enough shelves, lol. Personally, I think I'd hang that shelf over the new bench from the ceiling instead of supporting it with legs off the workbench. They're stealing valuable bench top space from you. And yes, pegboard is great, but sometimes the peg holes and hooks you have just don't line up exactly as you need for what you're trying to hang. Back in my little workshop/shed, I have pegboard on one wall but another is just covered with 3/4" or 1" x 5" or 6" wide boards. This allows me to pound nails in or install threaded hooks or eyes exactly where I need them. And lastly, I don't know how high your ceiling is above the garage door but mine was high enough to allow me to install a single long shelf above it. The garage door needs to be closed to access it and get at the stuff on it, but it was all just wasted space before that.

Upper storage unit all done! Nice to get totes and extra parts up and safely out of the way.

Now that is done I am going to focus on some smaller shelving units that are more sturdy than what I currently have. Maybe some cubbies for bigger tools too like saws and compressor... etc.

Spending the day building a few more shelves. The old sheet metal rack was pretty flimsy so I made some wooden shelves and supports. Had to keep it narrow on the right so I can utilize the service door. Slowly chipping away at it.
