Nutrition health and Weight loss

You fellows seem to have a handle on this and I wasn't going to say anything......but heck....it's hard for me once I get started.
I've always struggled with being over weight ever since I got out of High School. I've tried all sorts of "diets" and I could lose weight but would end up gaining it back. I did do the Adkins diet one time ( I'm thinking it's a Keto type too). To be honest....I lost weight....eating cheese, bacon and pork rinds !!!!!! BUT after a while I felt like I had poisoned myself. My wife kept saying how odd my skin color was.......so I finally let it and the pork rinds go.

My problem is I LOVE to eat.......and eat lots and mostly stuff that isn't that good for me.

15 months ago my doctor told me it was time I "tired" to lose weight "again".....ugh. I had gotten up to 245......and at 5'-8" I was WAY too short!!!!. With a suggestion from a friend I hooked up with a company called Clean Eatz.........fellows.....I can't begin to tell you how that decision has changed my life. I was eating lunch there 5-6 times a week and started on their fresh pre-made meal plan. I went from 245..........to 155 in just a little under 7 months.......and the good part is......I'm still there. Their slogan is "It's not a diet, it's a lifestyle". I went from 5 bypasses ( about 4 years ago) to finishing 2nd place in my age group in my first 5K just a couple of weeks ago.

My doctor has been very impressed with ALL my numbers......so much so he's taken me off of most of my meds ( which I didn't take many anyway)

I know it's probably not for everyone.........but for me it's been a life changer.

That is awesome Gordon...Congratulations...90 lbs in 7 months puts me to shame;)...but the important thing as you state is that it isnt a dieting..its a lifestyle.... I need to investigate further into Clean Eatz...Never have I heard of them..It obviously works ...

I think the "lifestyle" thing is important. Correct proportions and staying calorie deficient the first 6 months were the key for me. I was only taking in 1200 calories per day and getting enough exercise in to burn 300-500 of those calories 4-5 times a week. If you only get 1200 calories.....you need a little help making sure those calories count.

I hear a lot of good stuff about the Keto diets and you fellows seem to be having success with it.......all I want to add is ....losing weight and keeping it off at our age is DOABLE......you just gota get it in your head it's what you want.

It is different to maintain your body as an athelete..so the higher carb intake is necessary in order to fuel the extra work load your body requires..So most all of those high carb meals burn off when you are exercising....
In a ketogenic diet 20g carbs total limit per day In order to achieve Ketosis is the goal...This is for people who are Diabetic or Pre-stage T2 diabetic. And others just seeking to lose their extra weight...As an atheltic person does not need such restrictions.... Furthermore with myself in ketosis I burn body fat sitting still or even while asleep..Ketosis is a metabolizer..thus you have the same benefits as exercise. IMHO Cardio-vascular exercise for keeping your heart and lungs muscles etc in top condition is the reason you exercise..not for weight loss..control and sstability of your diet is from your active lifestyle.
in my younger years i used to run alot...70 miles/per week 7 days/week..you can do the math..LOL
I used to train in extreme conditions because race conditions(weather) were usually ideal conditions..so I would excel when running 10k's or longer locally...:D

Wish i could still run.. Cannot do that without much discomfort afterwards. Too much arthritic these days to be a runner anymore...I would love to have an eliptGo type bicycle to ride but the backroads around here are not bicycle or pedestrian safe...People out here(out in the county) will just run you off the roads... just aint worth it..nabe last year was walking and was struck by a car on the main back road out of our subdivision..that sucked...This is essentially running with wheels...

I deal with pain and fatigue on a daily basis, ever since my cancer episode 20 years ago. Chemotherapy, major surgeries, two bone-marrow transplants. Plus other "post therapeutic residuals". Including Tachycardia (normal pulse rate about 100).

Since then, my energy levels have been weird, like a bad battery. Imagine having a rechargeable drill/driver, it works great for the first 10 minutes, then goes flat. Then, you must recharge it for 3 days. Suspecting blood problems, tests show low red blood cell counts, near anemic.

This year, with the ranch activities, then starting Keto, my resting pulse has dropped to the 70s.

Feels like the Keto flu is subsiding, so got back into the ranch chores.

Do a few things,
Get light-headed, dizzy, almost ready to fall down.
Pulse is weak, rapid.
Set down, take a 15 minute break.
Repeat.

A 6-pointer came over to check me out.

thats an astonishing weight loss in such a short timeframe Gordon and an inspirational story. Generally it is better to lose weight at a slower rate as part of a long term sustainable lifestyle as we are more likely to be able to carry on after we have achieved our target weight. However your weight was clearly impacted your general health and sometimes it is necessary to lose weight fast.

Its good to hear that you are off your meds . If you were on Metformin then you'll see a big improvement in how you feel as that particular med has some unpleasant side effects and is like taking a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Diabetics will see a faster and more healthy reduction of blood glucose levels simply by quitting sugar and carbohydtates for a few weeks .

My HbA1c blood glucose level was 138 mmol/L when I collapsed with undiagnosed Diabetes in 2016.... I reduced that to 56mmol/L in just 6x weeks without any medication.
The highest ever recorded HA1bc was 147mmol/L Michael Patrick Buonocore (USA) (b. 19 May 2001), who survived a blood sugar level of 147.6 mmol/L (2,656 mg/dl) when admitted to the Pocono Emergency Room in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, USA, on 23 March 2008

Keep up the good work and let us know how you are getting on from week to week with your new lifestyle

You fellows are dealing with stuff I'm not.....and I consider myself lucky for it. I did need 5 bypasses but most of that was my fault. Never had a primary doctor (until after the bypasses) and if I would have he/she would have probably caught and prevented me from going through that.

I've heard about loosing weight too fast......and in the past it was true for me. I'd drop 20 in no time but gain it right back......BUT for me ( your results may vary) it all had to do with what I was shoving down my neck....not the time it took. That's where the lifestyle things comes in......I've had to change old habits.

You guys are an inspiration....I can only imagine what 2many's going through. Like I said.....I've heard a lot of good things about Keto.....I believe stuff like that works differently in people.....there's not one magic "cure all". Being overweight ( and according to the BMI charts it's doesn't take much) for the most part is uncomfortable......except just after that BIG plate of......potato salad, full rack of ribs and fires.....when you still have that glow on....oh my. Don't forget the desert!!!!

I'm an alcoholic..........sober now for over 30 years......but I will ALWAYS be an alcoholic. I have a weight problem because I LOVE to eat all the wrong things and eat a LOT of it......right now I have that under control but like my alcoholism......I'll always have a weight problem.

Hang in there fellows......I'm on your side in this struggle.

Sure hope things get better for you...

yes 2M has certainly been through it but thankfully came out the other side.;)

The thing about cancer treatment that never seems to get addressed is all the damage chemo and radiotherapy does to the body .
You lose the majority of your essential and minerals and vitamins which the body cannot make for itself . No wonder patients feel so completely exhausted and washed out after treatment. It takes months if not years for the body to recover in many instances and that recovery is hindered by not being advised about essential nutrition.

All of the essential minerals and vitamins that we need that the body cannot make are contained in fat and protein ie meat, eggs cheese full fat cream and milk etc. Yet after a heart attack or stoke we are still being advised to reduce our fat intake ?!

There is not a single essential mineral or vitamin contained in any carbohydrate thats a well proven fact now

What should happen is we should be given a referral to a specialist Nutritionist to find out what is now deficient and what will be needed to supplement until our bodies recover some of its natural hormone and vitamin production and homostastis which can take years without help. This also goes for surgery and other chronic illness.
Its not enough to take medication and ignore the root of the problem which has frequently caused the condition in the first place .

That's *exactly* what it felt like.

Took a break today, too wore out from yesterday.
Still progressing.
Down to 185lbs, left calf still smaller...

Have you overdoing things a bit lately ?
If you lived in the UK I would suggest you get a check up with your Doctor .
I have a wrist blood pressure monitor and a blood glucose monitor so I can check myself any time at home. They are very cheap and a very good investment.
I am a bit concerned at your symptoms 2m....I think you should get your blood pressure checked at the very least but your symptoms could simply be due to very low blood glucose levels ...yyou might be getting Hypoglycemic due to your current diet .IIs there anywhere you can get your blood glucose and blood pressure checked first thing in the morning before you eat anything ?

In the UK we can get these both checked for free at any main Chemist
?

Doctor? No, not for 17 years. I'm kinda on my own.
Extremely long and bizarre stories about this...
I don't know how you guys manage out in the sticks .?:umm:

Invest in a blood pressure monitor and blood glucose monitor 2M ...its the best health investment you can make.
they shouldn't cost you more than $25-30 .

We wouldn't think twice about investing that much in an oil filter and oil change on your bike would you ;)
Why is it we are so reluctant to invest in maintenance of our health ?.....

Haha, yeah, neat gadgets nowadays.
I have a wrist blood pressure monitor. Lowest it's been was 90/60.
I regularly wear a smartwatch, with pulse and sleep monitoring.

you little techie you :)...

90/60 is very low  no wonder you feel weak, fatigued and giddy when you stand up.

I am at the other extreme with a BP of 180/106 ! :yikes:

Given your diet and extreme weight loss /exercise regime lately , your low blood pressure could actually be due to a poor diet low in essential nutrients !

I suspect that you have been avoiding all the foods high in saturated and non saturated fats in order to lose weight and consequently you are probably now deficient in many essential minerals and vitamins which are only available in fat and protein foods like hard cheese , eggs, oily fish, full fat milk and thick cream, chicken ,beef pork etc . That coupled with your exercise regime lately has probably taken too much out of you.

Its essential to build in sufficient resting and sleeping in between extreme exercise as top Athletes do. The body has to have down time in order to repair muscle damage and build new tissue and muscle and blood supplies otherwise it can have serious negatives to our health.

You need to take it easy for a few days 2M ;) put your feet up watch some movies with the cats and take the time to plan your future and set some goals and targets for the coming year. Thats what I do when my back craps out goes into spasm and I can't walk. ;) its actually very productive time both mentally and physically

Hi Gordon,
alcoholism is best fought by total abstinence. Do that with food and you die in 2 months or less.
I'd liken a controlled food intake to controlling alcoholism by only having one drink a day.
Possible for sure, but not easy.

Peanut, thank you so much for your concerns, and for thinking that I'm a normal person. My low blood pressure has been ongoing since the cancer treatments. Because of the intense toxicity of the chemo cocktails, they installed a port-a-cath in my chest, plumbed directly to my heart, bypassing the permanent vein damage. Instead, got permanent heart and valve damage. So, I've had to begrudgingly adapt, pace myself.

... You need to take it easy for a few days 2M ;) put your feet up watch some movies with the cats ...

Ok, *that* I can do.

But, so much yet to be done...

No big news..I have concluded that my current weight @140# is sufficient and i will be maintaining this weight. No plans to return to 205# and no plans to push my weight into the 130#s' class. Yesterday for the 1st time in nearly 2 years i had spaghetti and meatballs for supper... Only an extra pound this a.m. at weigh in...
Now that body mass is under control I am beginning a cardio-vascular program to exercise heart-lungs and skeletel-muscular systems..would love to run again but that is too much punishment for this 67 year old bag o' bones...Looking into spinning and just brisk walikng...

WOW!....
thats a fantastic achievement max........ it really is an inspiration to the rest of us . Proof that it can be done if we are really serious about losing weight by changing the type of foods that we eat rather than fasting or starving ourselves. Well done I hope you'll keep us informed of progress with your cardio vascular program
