Took the "new head" to the Auto Hobby Shop and used their parts washer. Used their shop air to try to mod the rockers for VW big foot adjusters. The new bit I had didn't work. Time for plan "B". As soon as I figure out what that is...

Well time of the year to change the oil and put away. I don’t really want to but only time I got to do it along with other fall chores. Got a 5L jug of Shell T4 for $24 and can get 2 changes out of it. Went for a little ride after about 30 or so kms and runs the same as the 10w40 Yamalube I had in there. Screens had the typical little starter gear black and gear shaving gremlins. Gonna do the starter gear change and clip this winter. Got my eye on a fish scale on amazon :smoke:. All in all a good day. Got the oil changed in my Roadstar too! Winter is coming.......blahhhhhhhhh JC

Here she sits. My brother in law is an Amsoil dealer and I switch to metric synthetic 10w40. I used 10w40 Yamalube in it same as my XS before the switch. Gotta say, as soon as i started the bike after the oil change and went for a short ride big difference in sound. Nice and smooth. Got 94000kms on it and runs like a champ. Love my bikes!

Good for you JC - now batten down the hatches for winter.

Dammit.

Pete

I know Pete it stinks! Got all back yard furniture and pool closed up. Not much left other than get a few last rides in before old man winter gets nasty (maybe?!?). Making a list of things to do on my bikes and not too much to do on both. I hope it is not a sign to get another project! :laugh2:

A big hhhhooowwwwlllliiiinnnggg hello to everyone! It’s cool to see what everone is doing to their bikes! As I had recently posted that I discovered a small oil leak on the way home from the rally, no big deal, bike ran good all weekend! Figured just need to check torque! But I was going to do a top end tune up anyway, have new set rings I wanted to put in! Also my suspicions of my cam bearings starting to go was right! Started to hear them when I was up there! Left hand set but will change all four! Anyway, first time I started her today, started fine no problem on second kick no choke! Ran up the street to auto zone to get some stuff ,ran good except for the little oil seapage, coming home a couple ft away from my house, it went, loss power, engine did not cut off, oil blew out my left side exhaust, blue smoke! F*** I yelled! As I slowed the right cylinder was still firing enough to get to house ito driveway! Then it went to! Took top end off, good thing I was already prepared to do this, everthing actually looks good inside except this: the one with the big hole is the left side piston!

Gaaaah! You rolled Snake eyes! First I've ever seen.

Cam bearings are usually bulletproof.
I wonder if there's a lubrication problem...
Yea Twomany,it’s not real bad and it seams to have some tiny rubber bits in it I think that’s causing the friction, getting ready to clean them and lubricate them real good to see what happens, just one bearing the other three are good with no friction! Could these rubber bits been left over from my old time chain guides? Did not see any signs of metal! Sorry brushed them cleaned before I thought about a pic! They are original bearings still! Not really sure if that’s what I was hearing, one of them lil noises that pop up that your not used to hearing! Was useing the screwdriver as a stethoscope method and that was where the noise was the most! I know that is not really foolproof but it’s a start!

An observation on my XS2. My engine had developed more shake and vibration than normal, I was beginning to worry that it was the first sign of a larger problem. This pronounced shaking was really what prompted me to go through that whole tune up ritual the other day.

My 81 Special walks on its side stand at idle. Makes me nervous

Cleaned and detailed my Roadstar and the sun was nice and warm and winds were from the southwest so decided heck lets saddle up XS! Well 125kms later for a total of 1505kms since I have owned it and having it in pieces on my garage floor. I still cannot get enough on how well it rides and how fun this bike is compared to others that I have ridden. :)

I believe I found the problem with my cam bearing and where the black specks came from that was on the bearing, my oil seal was pushed in to far,was not flush with the housing, it was hitting the bearing causing the seal to chip, also o ring on housing was split where I believe where the oil leak was coming from, right hand side looks good! Don’t know if you can tell but here is a pic of oil seal! It’s chipped on the inside top edge of outer wall!
